Ways Through

What does it mean to move through a world that was not built with you in mind?

From Lagos roads and Cape Town Ubers to fairytale worlds and films that refuse to stay cancelled, these works find different ways through structures of isolation, exploitation and erasure. Sometimes movement offers escape; elsewhere it becomes survival, imagination, or simply the possibility of speaking on your own terms.

This programme is presented in collaboration with Jali Collective, a grassroots collective based in Edinburgh dedicated to widening access to African cinema and celebrating and elevating Black, African and diaspora stories through film and culture. Jali curates screenings, festivals, workshops and events that bring Black, African and diaspora cinema to audiences.

Tickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE, £4, £8, £12, £16, or £20, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. This event has:

• English-BSL interpretation for the introduction. The interpreter for this event is TBC.
• English, French, German audio with English language Descriptive Subtitles.
• Live Captioning for the introduction.
• An induction loop is available at the GFT Box Office. Enhanced Audio (EA) is available in their screening rooms via headset.

This screening is 66 minutes long and has an age recommendation of N/C 18+

Soft-spoken transmasc driver Toni navigates Cape Town’s divided streets in their late father’s vintage Daimler. When a blonde dreadlocked digital nomad unloads a traumatic story, something takes root in the backseat. As the increasingly possessed car turns on Toni and girlfriend Amanda, karmic justice takes the wheel.

A Black Fairytale, Dirs. Isabelle Edi, Mariama Sow, Kim Sanou, 2026, Austria, Côte d’Ivoire, Germany, Mali, Senegal, 23 min.

A Black Fairytale imagines queer black existence in fairytale worlds. In refusal of a linear story, the three directors glitch themselves in and intertwine the fairytale story with their own journey, marking their position and disclosure of desire. 

Taxi Moto, Dir. Gaël Kamilindi, 2026, Rwanda, France, Switzerland, 20 min.

Prevented from making his film, a director reinvents its images elsewhere, with another actor. As they search for each other, cinema becomes an act of love and intimate poetic resistance.
