We are recruiting volunteers for this year’s Festival!
SQIFF 2019 will take place 2 to 6 October in Glasgow. A training session which all volunteers must attend will be held on the afternoon of Saturday 28 September 2019 at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (Glasgow City Centre). Previous experience is not required but commitment to equality and improving accessibility to the arts is essential.

Why volunteer for SQIFF?
As part of the SQIFF volunteer team, you will provide invaluable support to the Festival, playing a vital role in ensuring its smooth running and success. You will gain experience working as part of a team at an inclusive international queer arts festival. You’ll also meet plenty of amazing people from filmmakers to audience members. When not on duty, you’ll get free access to Festival events depending on availability.
What we are looking for in SQIFF volunteers?
- A commitment to SQIFF’s values of inclusiveness and equality for all – click here to access SQIFF’s Equalities Policy
- People who are often marginalised from volunteering or working in the arts, for example: LGBTQIA+ people, people of colour, working class people, and D/deaf and Disabled people
- People with an interest in LGBTQIA+ film
- People who want to develop skills in team work and communication
- People who are open-minded and want to learn
- People who want to develop experience working in arts and culture
- People who are interested in accessibility in the arts
What will volunteers do at SQIFF?
Most of our volunteers will be part of the front of house team and responsible for the smooth running of events at SQIFF. You will be welcoming audiences, distributing guest tickets, handing out audience feedback forms, answering queries, and selling merchandise.
What is the required commitment of volunteers?
The majority of shifts will take place at CCA and will be 4-5 hours long with breaks. We prefer if you can commit to a minimum of two shifts but can be flexible on this if you have access requirements that mean you could only do 1 shift. You will be working in teams and will have time to catch some of the films when you are on duty. There will be a few evening shifts at our parties for those willing (where you will have time to party too!). You must attend our volunteer training session on Saturday 28 September in Glasgow.
What access measures exist for volunteers?
We have a travel fund to offer costs to volunteers who need this to be able to take part. There is no limit to the amount we can reimburse for travel within Scotland. For example, if you’re travelling from other parts of Scotland outside Glasgow to volunteer, we can cover the cost of this. Please let us know the amount you would require towards travel when applying.
Accessibility measures we will have in place for everyone attending the 2019 Festival include:
- Most venues have good access for wheelchair users and those with other mobility issues, including an accessible toilet
- All venues have on street parking or drop off points
- All films will screen with English language subtitles or captions
- BSL interpretation is available for select events
- CCA has hearing loops at the Box Office and in most event spaces
- Audio description is available for select events
- We have a large print brochure and large print programme and audience feedback handouts
- We will have comfy seating (bean bags) available
- We will have a Quiet Space with low lighting, comfy seating, noise cancelling headphones, stimming toys, and other activities available at CCA throughout the Festival
- Gender neutral toilets are available at CCA and most other venues
- Content notes are available for all screenings
