SUMMARY:I Do?: The Lodger (Glasgow)
DESCRIPTION:The Lodger is an early film from Alfred Hitchcock\, in which the notoriously queer-minded filmmaker gives a subversive critique of married coupledom – a trope which would infuse his later US work. A serial killer known as ‘The Avenger’ is loose in London and a mysterious lodger\, played by Ivor Novello\, becomes a suspect. His landlords’ daughter\, Daisy\, is courting a policeman\, Joe\, but is drawn to the enigmatic stranger. Daisy’s doubts about marrying Joe are conveyed through typical Hitchcock metaphors such as handcuffs whilst her attraction to Novello’s very queer character serves as a comment on the expansiveness of desire beyond heteronormative relationships. \nRated PG. \n£4 (£3 concessions). To book tickets please use the button below. We have a number of free tickets to give away. If you can’t afford the ticket price for any reason\, please email helen@sqiff.org or call 07735 273 245 to register for free entry. \nFilm silent with intertitles. SUMMARY:SQIFF Schools: Pride
DESCRIPTION:Summer\, 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. In London\, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support but the activists are not deterred and set off in a minibus to a mining village in Wales to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. \nRobert Kincaid\, a member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners who was present at events in 1984\, will join us for a Q&A after the film. \nPresented in association with LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThe event is suitable for Secondary 4-6. The film contains some strong language and sexual references. We are screening the film with English subtitles for accessibility. If anyone attending requires BSL interpretation for the introduction\, please let us know when booking. \nThe event is free for all schools\, youth groups\, and colleges. To book a place\, email helen@sqiff.org with the name of your school or group\, the name of the teacher supervising the trip\, the number of pupils you would like to bring\, and whether there are any accessibility requirements for anyone attending.
