SUMMARY:Lesbian with a Movie Camera
DESCRIPTION:As part of LGBT History Month Scotland\, we present a lovingly-curated selection of indie\, punk\, and DIY lesbian shorts from across half a century of filmmaking\, featuring known names and unsung (s)heroes alike.  Ranging from the hilarious to the experimental\, the programme features a rare screening of Caroline Sheldon’s witty and subversive 17 Rooms (Or What Do Lesbians Do in Bed?). Scheduled in 1986 for a prime slot on Channel Four’s pioneering In The Pink season\, Sheldon’s film was scandalously pulled at the last minute – not because of any explicit content but because it was thought audiences might object to its title. \nThis is a free\, unticketed event; donations are very much appreciated and will collected after the screening.  The screening is on the ground floor of our venue Transmission. Accessible toilet available. Films shown will include captions for better D/deaf and hard of hearing access.

SUMMARY:LUX Scotland and SQIFF present: Dani Leventhal
DESCRIPTION:Presented by LUX Scotland in association with SQIFF and Transmission\, American artist Dani Leventhal visits Glasgow to show and discuss her recent video work. \nHer videos are disjunctive\, diaristic\, and often feature people who become the unassuming subjects of her work. Describing her working process\, Leventhal says\, “I start with a subject that I care deeply about / I concentrate on fear\, desire\, anger\, confusion\, and love. / I concentrate on the emotional relationships between humans\, humans and animals\, and humans and their environments. / I am particularly interested in the way we develop based on our experiences in childhood\, and then the process of undoing it.” \nPresenting her shorts alongside her recent collaboration Hard As Opal with Jared Buckhiester\, Leventhal will also present a preview of her in-progress work\, Strangely Ordinary This Devotion\, a collaboration with Sheilah Wilson. \nThis is event is free and unticketed. \nACCESS: Transmission is accessible for wheelchair users via Trongate 103. Please enter at the street entrance to Trongate 103 and take the lift to the basement floor. Accessible toilets available. SQIFF has a policy of screening films with English subtitles or captions for deaf and hard of hearing access but unfortunately we are not able to do so on this occasion – big apologies for this.

Charles Lofton\, Country: USA\, Year: 1996 \nO Happy Day imagines the early days of gay liberation for black gay men. Lofton juxtaposes images of black men from late 60s and early 70s films with images of Black Panther Party demonstrations as a way of intentionally revising history. The soundtrack is punctuated by a 1970 quotation from Black Panther leader Huey Newton:

”There’s nothing to say that a homosexual cannot also be a revolutionary. Quite on the contrary\, maybe a homosexual could be the most revolutionary… \nMercy (10m) \nDir. Abigail Child\, Country: USA\, Year: 1989 \nAbigail Child composes a rhythmic collage of found footage\, drawing heavily on images of women within popular culture that foreground the treatment of the body as a mechanised instrument. She toes an exquisite line between symmetry and asymmetry\, both loose and taught – articulating a movement into\, through\, and potentially out of the maelstrom of the modern capitalist machine. \nScorpio Rising (30m) \nDir. Kenneth Anger\, Country: USA\, Year: 1964 \nA fetishistic opera of sex and death from a high priest of queer experimental cinema. Anger’s parodic yet empathetic recasting of popular consumer culture sees rival biker gangs evoke the bygone spirit of the mythic American cowboy. \nPlutonium Blonde (15m) \nDir. Sandra Lahire\, Country: UK\, Year: 1987 \nA beautiful\, evocative\, and quietly psychedelic work from feminist filmmaker Sandra Lahire. Part of a trilogy of mixed-genre films dealing with the potential dangers of nuclear power\, Plutonium Blonde is an intensely personal film that manipulates the materiality of 16mm film – its colour\, grain\, and techniques of superimposition – to equate the machinery of a plutonium reactor to the human body\, and question the political and economic construction of female identity. \nChumlum (23m) \nDir. Ron Rice\, Country: USA\, Year: 1964 \nA woozy and mercurial reverie through a baroque dreamscape of kaleidoscopic superimpositions. A cast of ethereal characters\, unmoored from Jack Smith’s Normal Love\, weave in and out of one another’s spaces\, minds\, and bodies. One of the queer underground’s most influential films. \n
