SUMMARY:What (the Fuck) is Lesbian Cinema? + The Book of Gabrielle (Edinburgh)
DESCRIPTION:The Book of Gabrielle is a clever dramedy about an intimate yet platonic relationship that develops between a female graphic artist and an older male erotic novelist. Saul delights in Gabrielle’s description of her past affairs and ongoing relationship with her younger girlfriend\, Olivia (Anna Koval)\, just as Gabrielle likes to explore masculinity through Saul. Does he help Gabrielle find her artistic voice or is Saul finding his? Does she need to break from his patriarchy in order to find herself? \nTo coincide with the launch of the film\, director and star Lisa Gornick presents an accompanying live drawing show What (the Fuck) is Lesbian Cinema? Using pen\, paper\, and watercolour\, Gornick explores where the desires of lesbian film are at right now alongside the politics\, money\, and passions aroused around it. \nAlso taking place at The Lighthouse in Glasgow on Saturday 28th October 2.30pm. \nACCESS: Filmhouse Foyer and box office are reached via a ramped surface from Lothian Road. Cinema 3 has one wheelchair space accessed via a platform lift. Advance booking for wheelchair spaces is recommended. Accessible toilets available. English language with English captions. Avian de Keizer\, 2023\, United States\, 3min. \nT4T is a short Super 8 experimental film about trans love and the medical system. \nAccess notes: Flashing Imagery. \n  \nLC39-A\, Dir. Josipa Anton\, 2026\, United States\, 4min. \nA short experimental documentary about the Space Race by filmmaker Josipa Anton\, LC-39A utilizes NASA archival footage and poetry by Bertolt Brecht to explore the march of history and technological progress as it intersects with ideology and cultural memory. \n  \nLunch Poems (Remix)\, Dir. J Triangular\, 2026\, Colombia\, Taiwan\, NYC\, 4min. \nIn Lunch Poems (Remix)\, J dusts off VHS tapes recorded in 2017 with their friend and collaborator Miss Expanding Universe (Ashley Yang-Thompson). They remix them into a fiery manifesto and intimate video diary — a collage of poetic art adventures in the streets of New York. The film captures the raw energy of poets claiming the city\, blending performance\, diary\, and queer rebellion. A hypnotic soundtrack of fragments sung by the poet threads the work together\, creating a bold\, immersive experience.\n \n  \nObjectionable Fruit\, Dirs. Hogan Seidel\, Gabby Follett\, 2026\, United States\, Canada\, Germany\, 15 min. \nObjectionable Fruit is an experimental documentary examining the Ginkgo tree\, a living fossil celebrated for its resilience and unique capacity to change sexes\, defying human-imposed binaries. Using the Ginkgo as a metaphor for fluidity and endurance\, the film weaves together themes of gender identity\, ecological interconnectedness\, and the nuanced complexities of queer existence. \nAccess notes: Flashing Imagery. \n  \nA CURE FOR SCARS\, Dir. Autojektor\, 2026\, United Kingdom\, 3 min. \nRestoration//Cleanses with Fire. The machine reclaims the ugly body. And replaces it with a digestible corpse. A Futile conversion. Pointless violence. \nAccess notes: Flashing Imagery. \n  \nTTT (Tᄐト)\, Dir. kimura byol lemoine\, 2025\, Canada\, 3 min. \n‘In the 100th episode of “Testo du jeudi” (TTT in English)\, Roman\, Korean (Hangeul) and Japanese (Katana) syllabic alphabets feature the word ‘TRANS’ in a sketch by Kě.’  \n  \nMarked\, Dir. Wrik Mead\, 2026\, Canada\, 3 min. \nMarked is an experimental film that merges Super 8 and 16mm formats to examine the presence of queer intimacy. At its center are two shirtless men\, locked in an embrace\, dancing — a quiet yet radical act. Overlaid with hand-inked 16mm film\, their bodies become both seen and obscured\, highlighted and erased. Through this layered process\, Marked reflects on how queer love is shaped\, celebrated\, and scarred by the society that surrounds it. \nAccess notes: Flashing Imagery. \n  \nTrivakra\, Dir. Sofia Angst\, 2025\, Brazil\, 10 min. \nTrivakra moves through the memories of a child\, crossed by gender biotechnologies that reshape their body and their history. The gushing syringe of a travesti ritual of hormonal transmutation opens a glitch in the matrix of gender and video\, where bones and skins are dematerialized into cyberspace. \nAccess notes: Flashing imagery\, flashing lights\, loud noises. \n  \nunbelong\, Dir. Pars Loren\, 2025\, Germany\, Türkiye\, 9 min. \nAt its heart\, unbelong is a philosophical inquiry posed through visceral experience. The narrated poem questions whether we move through time or time moves through us\, capturing the profound stillness of a moment when everything changes. It’s about the act of abandoning a home that abandoned you first\, and the sharp blade hidden in the question\, “Where are you from?“ unbelong is for anyone who understands that migration is not a simple journey but a rupture\, and that for some\, movement is not freedom but a painful necessity for survival. It is a work of grief\, hope\, and transformation. \nContent notes: Discussion of police violence\, transphobia. \n  \nthe bird sings with its fingers\, Dir. Marguerite Carson\, 2025\, Australia\, United Kingdom\, 5 min. \nSeabirds dip in and out of frame drawing on the ancient divination of the flights of birds\, asking when is a prophecy encountered and when is it voiced. \nDonate: \nDonate to SQIFF via PayPal or sign up to one of our four Patreon tiers to support our work and show us you’re a big SQIFF fan 🌈✨ \n  \nSupported by Screen Scotland\, the BFI Audience Projects Fund and Film Hub Scotland (part of the BFI Film Audience Network)\, all awarding National Lottery funding. \n  \nImage Credit: Trivakra\, Dir. SUMMARY:This Feeling Won't Leave - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \n**Please note this event is now sold out – we may be able to release more tickets nearer the screening.** \n  \nWhat happens when a feeling takes hold of the body and refuses to loosen its grip?  \nMoving between love\, memory\, erotic experimentation\, body horror and public scrutiny\, these films explore the ways queer people are desired\, judged\, transformed and misunderstood. A body changes beyond recognition. A lover becomes inseparable from a place. A private experience is turned into a public argument.  \nAcross the programme\, bodies become places where these feelings gather and leave their mark. Some characters surrender to what they feel\, while others fight to remain themselves against the expectations placed upon them. Together\, the films ask what remains after an encounter\, a transformation or a moment of exposure\, and what it means when that feeling simply refuses to fade.  \nThe screening will also feature a live poetry reading by Glasgow-based poet and performer Gray Crosbie\, whose work explores queerness\, intimacy and the body. \nCurated by Huss. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. SUMMARY:We Are Eternal
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nLove takes many shapes. In this selection of shorts from Brazil\, different kinds of love move through distinct relationships. Not eternal as in forever unchanged\, but constantly evolving: a throuple that keeps choosing each other as illness rewrites what they remember. Travesti friends who sit together inside grief rather than apart from it. Lovers locked out of their own home\, borrowing warmth from strangers until morning. A father and estranged son bound by an ache neither can name. A deaf man and a stranger\, something quiet beginning\, while an old friendship watches close by. \nThese films hold each of these bonds as a kind of eternity\, not because it lasts unchanged\, but because it keeps being shaped and reshaped. Every connection here is built\, lost\, and often but not always built again. Eternity is not permanence\, but persistence. Love that survives by being chosen\, over and over again. \nCurated by Indigo Korres and Ricky Mastro. Presented in partnership with Mostra Queer Brasil. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. SUMMARY:Beyond Words - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \n**Please note this event is now sold out – we may be able to release more tickets nearer the screening.** \n  \nWhat can a body say that words cannot?  \nBeyond Words moves between BSL\, breath\, music\, choreography\, vibration and touch\, following the many ways meaning can travel through the body. Across these films\, bodies become letters\, instruments\, signals and landscapes\, carrying desire\, memory\, fear\, pleasure and resistance.  \nAn alphabet is danced through ruins. A bog breathes. A kiss turns into a choir. A pop star battles her own manufactured personas. Elsewhere\, bodies move under surveillance\, fall in love\, grieve and find new ways to make themselves understood.  \nThese films do not exist outside language. They stretch it\, remix it and have a little fun with what it can become.  \nThe screening will end with a performance by Shawn Nayar whose work explores animal forms\, rage\, pain and passion.  \nCurated by Nat Lall & Huss. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. Tomasz Grabowski\, 2025\, Poland\, 18 min. \nMINT is a silent experimental journey into a world without sound. Across five chapters\, Deaf bodies\, memories and gestures become a language of their own. Through Polish Sign Language\, surreal imagery and moments of intimacy\, the film explores silence not as absence\, but as a space of expression\, desire and imagination. \n  \nDeep Breath\, Dir. Freya Spencer-Wood\, 2024\, United Kingdom\, 4 min. \nBuilding upon data produced by peatland scientists\, Deep Breath showcases the dance between the mythical will-o’-the-wisp\, phenomena of bog breathing and the landownership crisis in Scotland. The film discusses the tension between cultural perception of peatlands and landscape restoration in the context of an accelerating and unregulated carbon market. \nContent notes: Discussion of climate crises. \n  \nSamodiva (kissing choir)\, Dirs. Tomislav Latinovic\, Mathilda Harrison\, 2026\, United Kingdom\, 19 min. \nSometimes anticipation outshines the satisfaction of a kiss. I’m excited by the build-up and the tension\, when my hairs stand on end and my body feels fizzy. Things that were gross ten minutes ago become beautiful and erotic. We reach this meditative state in our thoughts\, sinking into our future satisfaction. Release is tainted by the knowledge that I’ve done this before\, and I’ll need to do it again. Live scored\, performed and recorded by the Voicing Choir\, a free community choir based in London. \nAccess notes: Loud sounds.  \nContent notes: Depiction of eroticism. \n  \nCHARITY!\, Dir. Stephen T Lally\, 2025\, Ireland\, United Kingdom\, 15 min.  \nSet on the eve of the Millenium\, ‘CHARITY!’ tells the story of a closeted Irish Y2K pop princess who undergoes a surreal assault on the senses as she wrestles with the cost of fame and a diabolical record label who’ll stop at NOTHING to make her a star. \nAccess notes: Flashing imagery. \nContent notes: Depiction of mild body horror\, and mild violence. \n  \nAbjad Hawaz (أبجد هوز)\, Dir. Hadi Moussally\, 2025\, France\, Lebanon\, Spain\, 5 min. \nAbjad Ḥawaz (أبجد هوز) takes its name from the ancient ordering of the Arabic alphabet. Through the body of Salma Zahore\, each letter is danced and embodied in the ruins of Barcelona. Blending fashion\, music\, poetry\, and performance\, the film reclaims a language often feared and misunderstood\, turning it into a celebration of identity\, resilience\, and artistic freedom. \n  \nHave/Are/Will Always\, Dir. Sam Digges Hunter\, 2025\, United States\, 5 min. \nOn February 22nd\, 2025\, a small group of transgender people gathered in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, USA\, where they enjoyed each other’s company and food. The resulting video is the only documentation of this event. Soundtrack by Scotty Townsend. \n  \nUBIQUITOUS\, Dir. Masha Maroutitch\, 2025\, United Kingdom\, 7 min. \nA young man is forced to confront feelings of self-rejection and isolation as he struggles to express his love for his best friend. ‘UBIQUITOUS’ is a short film that blends music\, visual poetry and an emotionally grounded performance to tell the story of a young man battling with internalised homophobia and unrequited love. \n  \nHow To Dance\, Dir. Aileen Ye\, 2026\, Netherlands\, United Kingdom\, 10 min. \nWhen every movement is surveilled\, the body learns to speak in new ways\, sensing freedom not merely as an idea\, but as a vibration. \nAccess notes: Flashing imagery. \nContent notes: Discussion of racism\, surveillance. \n  \nDonate: \nDonate to SQIFF via PayPal or sign up to one of our four Patreon tiers to support our work and show us you’re a big SQIFF fan 🌈✨ \n  \nSupported by Screen Scotland\, the BFI Audience Projects Fund and Film Hub Scotland (part of the BFI Film Audience Network)\, all awarding National Lottery funding. \n  \nImage Credit: MINT\, Dir. SUMMARY:Notes From a Collapsing World - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \n**Please note this event is now sold out – we may be able to release more tickets nearer the screening.** \n  \nThe world is ending all the time. Politically\, ecologically\, inside the body\, inside the home\, and across places that no longer offer safety. \nThese films begin from that pressure point. A damaged landscape becomes a site of pleasure and resistance. A lost relationship carries the weight of queer life under repression. A return to the countryside exposes the distance between belonging and safety. A journey through the occupied West Bank becomes an encounter with violence\, while two lovers at the edge of an unfamiliar world are forced to ask where home really is. \nAcross fiction\, essay\, documentary and experimental moving image\, these films move through grief\, displacement\, occupation and impossible returns. But collapse is not only an ending here. It is also where other forms of life begin to grow: pleasure as resistance\, memory as archive\, nature as collaborator\, and community as something built within hostile conditions. \nNotes from a Collapsing World is a programme about staying with the damage without letting it have the final word. It is about lovers\, landscapes\, borders\, loss and breath\, and the small\, stubborn ways queer life continues to reach towards a future. \nWe are delighted to welcome William Hong-xiao Wei\, director of Elegy for the Lost\, who will introduce the film before the screening. \nCurated by Huss. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. Laure Giappiconi\, Elisa Monteil\, La Fille Renne\, 2026\, France\, 7 min. \nWe no longer recognised neither flow nor forest. We had been halved\, quartered\, decimated. We had been fragmented\, shattered. The measure of drowning is an ecosexual fable about breathing better even when drowning\, finding ways to resist the collapse of life and re-nourishing desires. \nContent notes: Depiction of explicit sex\, nudity. Discussion of capitalism\, violence. \n  \nElegy for the Lost\, Dir. William Hong-xiao Wei\, 2025\, France\, Spain\, United Kingdom\, China\, 30 min. \nThrough the introspective voiceover of a young post-pandemic Chinese migrant in Europe\, the essay film interweaves her private memories of queer intimacy with public narratives of resistance\, confronting the personal cost of existing in the current age of turbulence and regression\, in a world that demands their silence. \nAccess notes: Flashing lights\, strobes. \nContent notes: Depiction of violence. Discussion of censorship\, COVID-19 pandemic\, displacement\, homophobia\, police\, surveillance. \n  \nThe Headgear\, Dir. Marcel Hörler\, 2026\, Switzerland\,  18 min. \nA hardened state that inscribes itself into bodies. Fascinating and tormenting at once. In search of queer liberation\, we walk along the memories of the director. To the places where he grew up in the countryside. He wants to go back\, but he cannot. Past idyllic landscapes and frozen waters\, towards communities that promise something to hold onto. And so we move\, step by step\, between reality and fiction\, to a place that finally holds him. \n  \nCOYOTES\, Dir. Said Zagha\, 2025\,  Palestine\, France\, United Kingdom\, Jordan\,  20 min. \nA Palestinian surgeon drives home after a long night shift\, but little does she know that a commute through a desolate West Bank road will change her forever. \nContent notes: Depiction of blood\, death\, military\, violence. \n  \nThe Ones Who Walk\, Dirs. SUMMARY:A Frown Gone Mad
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nBotox\, Revolax\, Sculptra\, Hyaron and Juvederm: all sorts of products\, perhaps not all entirely legal\, sell like hot cakes in Bouba’s Lebanese beauty salon. Skilfully\, though not always gently\, she jabs a constant stream of clients with all kinds of injectables to temporarily reduce their facial wrinkles and frown lines.  \nDirector Omar Mismar films the patients from a fixed position as they recline on the white plastic-wrapped treatment table. Young and old\, women and men\, from housewives to hip influencers\, it seems like the whole country is voluntarily undergoing these painful and gory treatments\, all of which are shown in closeup.  \nDuring the treatment\, the threat of war is a regular topic. Will war break out? Will you go and fight? Mixedup memories of wars and explosions reveal how violence has been an almost constant presence in the lives of Beirut’s inhabitants for decades.  \nBouba’s medicine is rough humour and a magic injection. As one customer aptly puts it: “Most people in line here are tired and unhappy. Bouba takes the pain from inside and works on it from the outside.”  \nThe screening will open with an extended introduction by a Glasgow-based artist. \nCurated by Huss. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. SUMMARY:Adam’s Apple - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \n**Please note this event is now sold out – we may be able to release more tickets nearer the screening.** \n  \nAdam’s Apple is an intimate\, collaborative documentary told through the dual perspectives of Adam\, a transgender teen\, and his mother\, visual artist Amy Jenkins\, that offers an authentic and tender counterpoint to the hostility facing trans youth today. Adam’s journey balances the milestones of gender transition with the rhythms of adolescence. As Adam asserts his identity and steps out into the world\, his parents grapple with the challenges of raising a teen while learning to let go. Through a visually poetic approach\, the film transforms a deeply personal archive\, collected over two decades\, into a powerful\, joyful testament to the beauty and difficulty of reckoning with profound change. \nAfter the screening\, Adam Sieswerda will join SQIFF Director Indigo Korres in conversation. \nPresented in partnership with Scottish Documentary Institute. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. SUMMARY:The Past Is Still Warm
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nThe past does not stay where we leave it. It lingers in bodies\, landscapes\, old recordings\, unfinished love stories and places that may no longer welcome us back.  \nThese films return to what has been lost: a lover in Cairo\, lives cut short before memories could fully form\, a vanished queer community\, a homeland held at a distance\, and a love story surviving only in remnants of the archive. Across essay\, fiction and experimental moving image\, they ask what it means to search for someone\, somewhere or some version of ourselves that can no longer be reached.  \nBut memory is not only an act of mourning. Here\, it becomes ritual\, invention\, performance and transformation. Rivers awaken\, fish offer refuge\, landscapes hold forgotten presences\, and damaged archives become spaces where love can be imagined again.  \nThe Past Is Still Warm is a programme about queer memory and the ways it continues to live among us. It is about longing\, exile\, survival and the fragile traces through which the absent remain close.  \nFollowing the screening\, Matthew Arthur Williams\, director of Another Allegory\, will present a live sound performance. \nCurated by Huss. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. As they move through the dense forest\, the environment seems to breathe with them\, and the land begins to reveal fragments of the community’s memory. Through a number of performances and camera moments including a burgeoning thunderstorm that desires to break –  the film is akin to a muscle or root that has been damaged or even severed. \nAccess notes: Flashing imagery. \n  \nImage Credit: Truth Or Fish\, Dir. SUMMARY:Yapping Out Loud: Contagious Thoughts from an Unrepentant Whore
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nOn May 1\, 2002\, transsexual sex worker and performance artist Mirha-Soleil Ross delivered a powerful monologue confronting anti-prostitution rhetoric and campaigns\, exposing their often devastating effects on sex workers’ lives\, rights\, and working conditions. Combining sharp political commentary with striking performance documentation and hard-hitting animal rights footage\, the film moves between anger\, wit\, and resistance. Ross challenges the moral assumptions underpinning campaigns against sex work\, while drawing connections between different forms of oppression and control. Fierce\, provocative\, and uncompromising\, the work becomes a manifesto for bodily autonomy\, solidarity\, and freedom for all. \nAfter the screening\, Jaye Hudson of TGirlsonFilm will be in conversation with writer\, filmmaker and trans daughter of Ross\, Morgan M Page\, discussing Ross’s prolific oeuvre\, including her video work\, trans film festival\, and the iconic recently republished zine Gender Trash from Hell. \nCurated by Jaye Hudson and Morgan M Page. SUMMARY:Closing Gala: Hunky Jesus
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nJoin us for the closing event of the Scottish Queer International Film Festival as we celebrate another year of exceptional queer cinema. This year’s closing film is Hunky Jesus\, a documentary capturing the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s iconic take on Easter Sunday. The sisters celebrate Easter with a massive drag competition in which people compete to be the hunkiest Jesus. It documents how community and camp can be powerful tools for resistance and solidarity. Essentially it’s an extremely fun\, silly work of queer cinema. It’s a guaranteed mood booster. And\, a fantastic way to wrap up another great year of SQIFF.
\nThe film will be followed by a panel discussion with House of Nunsense\, Glasgow’s own chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.  \nThe winner of Best Scottish Short will be announced at the start of this event. Please join us in congratulating the winner and all our filmmakers on another year of SQIFF. \nCurated by Nat Lall. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income.
