DESCRIPTION:A focus on the work of two British-South Asian queer women filmmakers across different generations. Activist and director Pratibha Parmar’s work centres on gender\, race\, and LGBT issues. Her groundbreaking Khush (1991)\, for instance\, portrays lesbian women and gay men in India and the Indian diaspora discussing acceptance and embracing of their sexuality. We explore Pratibha’s prolific output alongside that of emerging London-based artist Seema Mattu\, who uses digital media to present an awareness of the overlooked ethnic self in regards to various degrees of minoritisation. \nWe are delighted Seema will join us to discuss her work. Delany is also a well-regarded literary critic and academic with a candid and iconoclastic approach. He recounts his Harlem childhood\, experiences with psychotherapy\, and promiscuous adventures in the infamous Everard Baths and other public-sex venues. DESCRIPTION:On her way to the store with a group of friends\, trans woman Chrishaun Reed “CeCe” McDonald was brutally attacked and in defending her life\, a man was killed. After a coercive interrogation\, CeCe was incarcerated in a men’s prison in Minnesota. An international campaign to free CeCe garnered significant support from media and activists\, including actress Laverne Cox. Cox signed on as executive producer of FREE CeCe!\, committed to exploring the role race\, class\, and gender played in the case. In the end\, CeCe emerged not only as a survivor but also as a leader. \nFollowed by a discussion with Chryssy Hunter from Bent Bars Project\, a letter writing scheme for LGBTQ+ people in prison in the UK. DESCRIPTION:Two OWL (older\, wiser lesbian) couples accidentally kill a younger woman and hide the body but their dark secret comes back to haunt them in Cheryl Dunye’s experimental\, collaborative movie\, The Owls. DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker and vlogger Ross Wilcock presents short films building on his own video for BBC The Social\, Online Dating with a Disability. Themes of ableism and anxiety around sex and dating are explored alongside joy in self-expression and claiming Queer and Disabled as an identity. Screening along with Ross’ own work are Sherren Lee’s The Things You Think I’m Thinking\, about a burn-survivor and amputee going on a date for the first time since his accident\, and Picture This\, in which Canadian activist Andrew Gurza describes his mission to make sex and disability part of the public discourse.   \nFollowed by a discussion hosted by Ross Wilcock on being queer and Disabled and what that means for your dating life.
