SUMMARY:SQIFF Shorts: Bodies and Borders
DESCRIPTION:The most urgent issues surrounding identity and oppression revolve around bodies and borders. In Being Okey\, a gay Nigerian man is denied asylum in Switzerland and consequently caught between the constant fear of being sent home and hope of a life in safety. ABEO is an animation by Latinx artist Brenda M. Lopez Zepeda depicting the journey of two immigrants risking their lives to cross the Arizona desert. My Shoreline is an experimental film-poem about a disabled queer body in water\, and My Own Wings documents intersex people from around the world. Working class queer bodies and class borders are forefronted in Krissy Mahan’s All in a Day’s Work and the implication of supposed sexual boundaries is explored in Patricia Silva’s bisexual ode\, A Feeling More Than a Picture. DESCRIPTION:Indulging our obsession with cutesy animals\, we present a gay goldfish\, genderqueer spotted hyena\, an affair between a dorky fox and a hunky wolf\, and a somewhat unfortunate cat. This selection of shorts reflects on the non-human as allegories for our own queer lives\, mediators of family discord\, and source of philosophical contemplation of race\, gender\, and the human condition. DESCRIPTION:Husein is a barber in Istanbul balancing life between his conservative family and his gay identity. Mahmoud is the founder of Syria’s LGBTI movement and a refugee living in Berlin. In this powerful documentary\, they both dream of participating in an international beauty contest in order to challenge the invisibility that comes with being gay Arabs. \nScreening as part of Kinning Park Complex’s monthly community meal. DESCRIPTION:Two OWL (older\, wiser lesbian) couples accidentally kill a younger woman and hide the body but their dark secret comes back to haunt them in Cheryl Dunye’s experimental\, collaborative movie\, The Owls. Featuring Dunye’s trademark\, self-reflexive style where both characters and actors create video diaries adjacent to the main narrative\, The Owls also attempted collective filmmaking with cast and crew encouraged to pitch in ideas.\n \nThose involved form a roll call of lesbian film excellence with Guinevere Turner\, Lisa Gornick\, V.S. DESCRIPTION:SQIFF’s Helen Wright presents a screening-performance looking at the work of DIY queer filmmakers Krissy Mahan and Nakshatra Bagwe whilst joined by the filmmakers via the interwebs for a live conversation. \nKrissy Mahan and her alter ego Faggotgirl – based in New York – have been making movies using humour as a feminist tool for 25 years. Mahan’s movies centre the social failures around accessibility\, gender identity\, mental health\, immigration\, and working class post-industrial cities. \nNakshatra Bagwe is a gay rights activist and filmmaker from Mumbai who started making zero budget films focused on homosexuality and queer community awareness at the age of 22. Both artists will discuss the ideas behind filmmaking with a DIY ethos. SUMMARY:Document Presents: FREE CeCe!
DESCRIPTION:On her way to the store with a group of friends\, trans woman Chrishaun Reed “CeCe” McDonald was brutally attacked and in defending her life\, a man was killed. After a coercive interrogation\, CeCe was incarcerated in a men’s prison in Minnesota. An international campaign to free CeCe garnered significant support from media and activists\, including actress Laverne Cox. Cox signed on as executive producer of FREE CeCe!\, committed to exploring the role race\, class\, and gender played in the case. In the end\, CeCe emerged not only as a survivor but also as a leader. \nFollowed by a discussion with Chryssy Hunter from Bent Bars Project\, a letter writing scheme for LGBTQ+ people in prison in the UK. DESCRIPTION:Described by director Gregg Araki as “A Beverly Hills 90210 episode on acid\,” Nowhere follows 18-year-old Dark Smith through a day in the teenager’s life in LA. Dark fails to get the emotional support he craves from girlfriend Mel\, who is also involved with a girl named Lucifer\, while Dark moons over hunky Montgomery. A spree of kinky sex\, hallucinogenic drugs\, random violence\, romantic misunderstandings\, and alien abduction ensues. Part of Araki’s notorious Teen Apocalypse Trilogy exploring alienation\, fluid sexuality\, and Armageddon. \nScreening with short Self and Others (6 mins)\, a study of the visual language of sexual fluidity as captured through the lens of film history. DESCRIPTION:Fred Barney Taylor’s documentary offers a portrait of Samuel R. Delany\, black gay man\, radical\, and revered author of science fiction novels. Delany is also a well-regarded literary critic and academic with a candid and iconoclastic approach. He recounts his Harlem childhood\, experiences with psychotherapy\, and promiscuous adventures in the infamous Everard Baths and other public-sex venues. Interviews are juxtaposed with grainy home movies of Delany’s family and absorbing footage of the bridges\, streets\, trains\, and skyscrapers of the writer’s native New York. \nSamuel R.
