SUMMARY:Rafiki with EUSA Liberation Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:“Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives\,” but Kena and Ziki long for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their families\, the girls resist and remain close friends\, supporting each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them\, the two girls will be forced to choose between happiness and safety. Rafiki made international news after being banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board for its homosexual theme and promotion of lesbianism. Director Wanuri Kahiu subsequently sued the Kenyan government. DESCRIPTION:Two OWL (older\, wiser lesbian) couples accidentally kill a younger woman and hide the body but their dark secret comes back to haunt them in Cheryl Dunye’s experimental\, collaborative movie\, The Owls. Featuring Dunye’s trademark\, self-reflexive style where both characters and actors create video diaries adjacent to the main narrative\, The Owls also attempted collective filmmaking with cast and crew encouraged to pitch in ideas.\n \nThose involved form a roll call of lesbian film excellence with Guinevere Turner\, Lisa Gornick\, V.S. Brodie\, and Dunye playing the ageing\, bitter queers\, and Sarah Schulman\, Alex Juhasz\, and Campbell X amongst others working behind the scenes. Dunye’s fourth feature film as director is an under-appreciated examination of lesbian culture and aesthetics with a good dose of crime movie genre fun thrown in. \n \nThe film will be introduced by SQIFF’s Helen Wright. DESCRIPTION:SQIFF’s Helen Wright presents a screening-performance looking at the work of DIY queer filmmakers Krissy Mahan and Nakshatra Bagwe whilst joined by the filmmakers via the interwebs for a live conversation. \nKrissy Mahan and her alter ego Faggotgirl – based in New York – have been making movies using humour as a feminist tool for 25 years. Mahan’s movies centre the social failures around accessibility\, gender identity\, mental health\, immigration\, and working class post-industrial cities. \nNakshatra Bagwe is a gay rights activist and filmmaker from Mumbai who started making zero budget films focused on homosexuality and queer community awareness at the age of 22. Both artists will discuss the ideas behind filmmaking with a DIY ethos. DESCRIPTION:The worldwide stage appearances and workshops of gender activist and performance artist Diane Torr are legendary. For over thirty years\, the focus of Diane’s work was an exploration of the theoretical\, artistic\, and practical aspects of gender identity. Director Katarina Peters observes a Berlin workshop taught by Diane\, in which a group of open-minded women come together to discover the secrets of masculinity. What makes a man a man and a woman a woman? Precisely when and where is gender identity created? DESCRIPTION:A focus on the work of two British-South Asian queer women filmmakers across different generations. Activist and director Pratibha Parmar’s work centres on gender\, race\, and LGBT issues. Her groundbreaking Khush (1991)\, for instance\, portrays lesbian women and gay men in India and the Indian diaspora discussing acceptance and embracing of their sexuality. DESCRIPTION:Beginning with clips from TV and film\, we examine how LGBTQ working-class identities have been demonised\, patronised\, and romanticised onscreen\, before considering representation we would like to see in future. We will also think about how cultural venues can be made more welcoming to working-class people. \nThis workshop is for working-class people (background and/or current situation) and allies. Although interactive\, there is no pressure to actively participate in discussion. It is run by two working-class femme lesbians who navigate middle-classness via their work. SUMMARY:Lesbian with a Movie Camera
DESCRIPTION:As part of LGBT History Month Scotland\, we present a lovingly-curated selection of indie\, punk\, and DIY lesbian shorts from across half a century of filmmaking\, featuring known names and unsung (s)heroes alike.  Ranging from the hilarious to the experimental\, the programme features a rare screening of Caroline Sheldon’s witty and subversive 17 Rooms (Or What Do Lesbians Do in Bed?). Scheduled in 1986 for a prime slot on Channel Four’s pioneering In The Pink season\, Sheldon’s film was scandalously pulled at the last minute – not because of any explicit content but because it was thought audiences might object to its title. \nThis is a free\, unticketed event; donations are very much appreciated and will collected after the screening.  The screening is on the ground floor of our venue Transmission. Accessible toilet available. Films shown will include captions for better D/deaf and hard of hearing access.

SUMMARY:Queer Horror: The Haunting
DESCRIPTION:Dr. John Markway\, an anthropologist with an interest in psychic phenomena\, takes two specially selected women to Hill House\, a reportedly haunted mansion. Eleanor\, a lonely\, eccentric woman with a supernatural event in her past\, and the bold (and all but openly lesbian) Theodora\, who has ESP\, join John and the mansion’s heir\, cynical Luke. They are immediately overwhelmed by strange sounds and events\, and Eleanor comes to believe the house is alive and speaking directly to her. The Haunting is a pretty solid argument for the underlying queerness of the Hollywood horror movie aesthetic. \nScreening with short film Cheat (2 mins). DESCRIPTION:When Marit Östberg finally had enough time to edit the footage she shot in 2011\, it was already four years old. And\, by then\, her idea of a mockumentary on how to (and how not to) make queer porn had quietly changed into something different: a nostalgic look at nostalgia and a way to rewrite her own history. Now\, she could look back at the idealism of the community she had lived and worked in\, but from the perspective of knowing how things had turned out. The result became something beautiful and thoughtful and funny and sad – and still very\, very hot.
