SUMMARY:SQIFF Schools: Out (CCA)
DESCRIPTION:So much of young people’s experience of sexual and gender identity in the present day comes via the internet. However\, the old pain and awkwardness of ‘coming out’ to friends and family remains the same. This new documentary from French director Denis Parrot combines the phenomenon of online queer culture with the intimacy of young people’s revelations about themselves. Out presents a collection of compelling videos posted online by young LGBTQ+ people\, showing us their experience of telling loved ones about their identity. \nFollowed by a discussion hosted by LGBT Youth Scotland about the experiences of LGBTQ+ young people communicating their identity to family and friends and finding acceptance. The event is kindly sponsored by LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThis event is free and only open to schools. The film and discussion are suitable for S1-6. Please email helen@sqiff.org to book spaces. \n  \nACCESS \nFilm mostly in the English language with English language subtitles/captions. Hearing loop available. \nFilm relies on visual material to convey ideas but has a lot of voiceover and commentary\, so is relatively accessible for blind and partially sighted audiences. Large print versions of handouts available. \nCCA has good access for wheelchair users. Click here for more details on venue access.

SUMMARY:Discussion: Deaf & Disabled Aesthetics in Film
DESCRIPTION:Availability of access measures such as captions and audio description is often seen as an ‘extra’\, sitting separately from films as works of art. However\, many D/deaf and Disabled and ally filmmakers and cultural workers integrate accessibility into their style of filmmaking\, or consider artistic ideas in their creation of access measures. This session will feature presentations from people working in Deaf and Disabled film aesthetics\, including actor\, filmmaker\, and Artistic Director of Turtléar\, EJ Raymond and artist\, curator\, and consultant\, Caglar Kimyoncu. Followed by an open discussion hosted by SQIFF’s Access & Engagement Coordinator and artist\, Alison Smith. \nTickets are priced on a sliding scale £0-£8 depending on what you can afford. To book\, please use the button below or call CCA box office on +44 (0)141 352 4900. \n[bra_button text=’Buy Tickets’ url=’https://ccaglasgow.ticketsolve.com/shows/873598359/events/128819682′ target=’_blank’ size=’medium’ style=’rounded’ color=’pink’] \n  \nACCESS \nThe event will be BSL interpreted with any film clips subtitled/captioned. SUMMARY:The Owls at GFAF
DESCRIPTION:Two OWL (older\, wiser lesbian) couples accidentally kill a younger woman and hide the body but their dark secret comes back to haunt them in Cheryl Dunye’s experimental\, collaborative movie\, The Owls. Featuring Dunye’s trademark\, self-reflexive style where both characters and actors create video diaries adjacent to the main narrative\, The Owls also attempted collective filmmaking with cast and crew encouraged to pitch in ideas.\n \nThose involved form a roll call of lesbian film excellence with Guinevere Turner\, Lisa Gornick\, V.S. Brodie\, and Dunye playing the ageing\, bitter queers\, and Sarah Schulman\, Alex Juhasz\, and Campbell X amongst others working behind the scenes. Dunye’s fourth feature film as director is an under-appreciated examination of lesbian culture and aesthetics with a good dose of crime movie genre fun thrown in. \n \nThe film will be introduced by SQIFF’s Helen Wright. Screening as part of Glasgow Feminist Arts Festival\, taking place 15 to 18 November.\n \nTickets are priced on a sliding scale £0-£8 depending on what you can afford. To book\, please use the button below. \n[bra_button text=’Buy Tickets’ url=’https://ccaglasgow.ticketsolve.com/shows/873598169′ target=’_blank’ size=’medium’ style=’rounded’ color=’pink’]\n \n  \nACCESS \nFilm in the English language with English language subtitles/captions for access. SUMMARY:What (the Fuck) is Lesbian Cinema? + The Book of Gabrielle (Edinburgh)
DESCRIPTION:The Book of Gabrielle is a clever dramedy about an intimate yet platonic relationship that develops between a female graphic artist and an older male erotic novelist. Saul delights in Gabrielle’s description of her past affairs and ongoing relationship with her younger girlfriend\, Olivia (Anna Koval)\, just as Gabrielle likes to explore masculinity through Saul. Does he help Gabrielle find her artistic voice or is Saul finding his? Does she need to break from his patriarchy in order to find herself? \nTo coincide with the launch of the film\, director and star Lisa Gornick presents an accompanying live drawing show What (the Fuck) is Lesbian Cinema? Using pen\, paper\, and watercolour\, Gornick explores where the desires of lesbian film are at right now alongside the politics\, money\, and passions aroused around it. \nAlso taking place at The Lighthouse in Glasgow on Saturday 28th October 2.30pm. \nACCESS: Filmhouse Foyer and box office are reached via a ramped surface from Lothian Road. Cinema 3 has one wheelchair space accessed via a platform lift. Advance booking for wheelchair spaces is recommended. Accessible toilets available. English language with English captions. SUMMARY:Arika Presents: The Polymath\, or The Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany\, Gentleman
DESCRIPTION:Fred Barney Taylor’s documentary offers a portrait of Samuel R. Delany\, black gay man\, radical\, and revered author of science fiction novels. Delany is also a well-regarded literary critic and academic with a candid and iconoclastic approach. He recounts his Harlem childhood\, experiences with psychotherapy\, and promiscuous adventures in the infamous Everard Baths and other public-sex venues. Interviews are juxtaposed with grainy home movies of Delany’s family and absorbing footage of the bridges\, streets\, trains\, and skyscrapers of the writer’s native New York. \nSamuel R. Delany will be present at and taking part in Arika’s Episode 9: Other Worlds Already Exist\, 16th-19th November at Tramway\, Glasgow. SUMMARY:Sad Girl Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Sad Girl Cinema is an ongoing documentary film project exploring mental health narratives in screen culture created by queer writers Claire Biddles and Bethany Rose Lamont and designed by Maggie Webster. Sorted into three themes: therapy\, the mental health ward\, and tortured geniuses and tragic muses\, SGC navigates a whole bunch of pop cultural clichés in film\, television\, and music videos. Accessible toilets available. English language with English captions. BSL interpretation for discussion. Hearing loop. \nContent note: discussion and depiction of mental health issues and therapy. \nTicket prices on a sliding scale according to your circumstances.
