SUMMARY:Free Family Film: Finding Dory
DESCRIPTION:Dory (voiced by gay rights hero Ellen DeGeneres) is a wide-eyed\, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every ten seconds or so. The one thing she can remember is that she somehow became separated from her parents as a child. With help from her friends\, Nemo and Marlin\, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find them. Her journey brings her to the Marine Life Institute\, a conservatory that houses diverse ocean species. There are also still tickets left for our screening of Catherine’s new film\, Chavela. \nFounder and Director of Aubin Pictures\, Catherine Gund is an Emmy-nominated producer\, director\, writer\, and activist. Her work focuses on sustainable social transformation\, sexuality and gender\, HIV/AIDS\, reproductive health\, and other social justice issues. She works actively with numerous organisations to this end and co-founded Third Wave Foundation\, which supports young women and transgender youth\, and DIVA TV\, an affinity group of ACT UP/NY. She was founding director of BENT TV\, a video workshop for LGBT youth. Her most recent films include Chavela (2017)\, Dispatches from Cleveland (2017)\, and Born to Fly (2014). \nIn this unique day-long workshop\, Catherine will explore her approach to making powerful\, character-centred films\, from shorts to features\, and her commitment to stories about LGBTQI communities. DESCRIPTION:“I just want to be loved by my family\,” says Bennett\, a 19-year-old trans man. “But for my family\, it’s not as simple as that.” Ben’s mum is having a hard time coming to terms with her child’s transition. His dad and sister no longer speak to him. But thanks to social media\, Ben meets a whole network of people who support him\, including best friend Dylan and Joe Stevens\, a trans musician. With their support\, Ben comes to terms with his identity and begins to build bridges with his family. Real Boy is raw and breathtakingly honest\, creating a sense of awe at the resilience of its subjects. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion on transgender issues led by young people from LGBT Youth Scotland\, which is kindly supporting this event. DESCRIPTION:As part of LGBT History Month Scotland\, we present a lovingly-curated selection of indie\, punk\, and DIY lesbian shorts from across half a century of filmmaking\, featuring known names and unsung (s)heroes alike.  Ranging from the hilarious to the experimental\, the programme features a rare screening of Caroline Sheldon’s witty and subversive 17 Rooms (Or What Do Lesbians Do in Bed?). Scheduled in 1986 for a prime slot on Channel Four’s pioneering In The Pink season\, Sheldon’s film was scandalously pulled at the last minute – not because of any explicit content but because it was thought audiences might object to its title. \nThis is a free\, unticketed event; donations are very much appreciated and will collected after the screening.  The screening is on the ground floor of our venue Transmission. DESCRIPTION:Leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi\, a law banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors” – which could potentially be enforced against any LGBT person if they “flaunted” their status – was enacted in Russia. Human rights activists and LGBT people involved in the Games contemplated what to do about the situation. To Russia with Love documents their responses and reactions\, speaking to a variety of contributors\, including current and former Olympians and local LGBT campaigners. \nFollowed by a panel discussion on the political situation surrounding events. SUMMARY:SQIFF Family Film: Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Inside Out ventures inside the mind to find out. Platform Glasgow is proud to present a FREE screening of Disney Pixar’s original new film as part of this year’s Scottish Queer International Film Festival. \nBased in Headquarters\, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind\, five Emotions are hard at work\, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler)\, whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety\, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is\, and frankly\, neither is anyone else. \nWhen Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city\, the Emotions are on the job\, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind—taking some of her core memories with them—Fear\, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory\, Imagination Land\, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters\, and Riley. DESCRIPTION:This event is now SOLD OUT. \nJoy Gharoro-Akpojotor is an award-winning filmmaker and director and producer of recent UK web series\, Boxx\, following two black diasporan\, London-based trans artists as they create a documentary about their lives. Participants are invited to submit their ideas for – or work-in-progress – web series before the session. Vex worked as an alt porn model and webcam performer before beginning to make video work in 2013. Self-taught in editing and videography with an emphasis on collaborative DIY practices\, Four Chambers exists alongside a new wave of creators making contemporary pornographic work from a new perspective. SUMMARY:Masterclass with Raúl de la Morena and Antonio Centeno
DESCRIPTION:A masterclass with the directors of Spanish documentary\, Yes\, we fuck!\, an unflinching and nuanced exploration of disability and sexual desire. Raúl de la Morena is a filmmaker who produces documentaries with Foro de vida independiente y divertad (Forum for Independent Living and Diversity). Antonio Centeno is a disability rights activist who embarked on Yes\, we fuck! as a means to challenge society’s attitudes. The session will focus on the process of creating work on the theme of disability\, the use of social media and crowdfunding in building a project\, and documentary filmmaking with a limited budget. \nPresented in partnership with Scottish Documentary Institute. SUMMARY:SQIFF Schools: Pride
DESCRIPTION:Summer\, 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. In London\, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support but the activists are not deterred and set off in a minibus to a mining village in Wales to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. \nRobert Kincaid\, a member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners who was present at events in 1984\, will join us for a Q&A after the film. \nPresented in association with LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThe event is suitable for Secondary 4-6. The film contains some strong language and sexual references. We are screening the film with English subtitles for accessibility.
