SUMMARY:Portraits of Artists as Young Men (& Women & Other)
DESCRIPTION:SQIFF curates a screening as part of Glasgow School of Art’s Degree Show programme\, Dress Rehearsal. Portraits of Artists as Young Men (& Women & Other) takes a look at the earlier\, formative days of queer artists who have gone on to make significant bodies of work. Featuring documentation and experimental meanderings by and/or about photographer Ajamu X\, circus performer Jennifer Miller\, and filmmakers Thomas Allen Harris and Barbara Hammer\, amongst others. Common themes emerge of hitting back against oppression and searching for identity through the creative process. \nThis event is free and unticketed. Just come along on the night. \nClick here for GSA’s full Dress Rehearsal Degree Show programme. \nACCESS \nFilms are in the English language with English language captions. \nFilms are experimental so some are quite visual-based but there is a relatively good amount of explanatory dialogue for blind and partially sighted audiences. Large print versions of handouts available. \nThe Art School has good access for wheelchair users. Click here for more details on venue access.

SUMMARY:SQIFF Schools: Out (CCA)
DESCRIPTION:So much of young people’s experience of sexual and gender identity in the present day comes via the internet. However\, the old pain and awkwardness of ‘coming out’ to friends and family remains the same. This new documentary from French director Denis Parrot combines the phenomenon of online queer culture with the intimacy of young people’s revelations about themselves. Out presents a collection of compelling videos posted online by young LGBTQ+ people\, showing us their experience of telling loved ones about their identity. \nFollowed by a discussion hosted by LGBT Youth Scotland about the experiences of LGBTQ+ young people communicating their identity to family and friends and finding acceptance. The event is kindly sponsored by LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThis event is free and only open to schools. The film and discussion are suitable for S1-6. Please email helen@sqiff.org to book spaces. \n  \nACCESS \nFilm mostly in the English language with English language subtitles/captions. Hearing loop available. \nFilm relies on visual material to convey ideas but has a lot of voiceover and commentary\, so is relatively accessible for blind and partially sighted audiences. Large print versions of handouts available. \nCCA has good access for wheelchair users. Click here for more details on venue access.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Filmmaking with Lasse Långström
DESCRIPTION:Lasse Långström’s films – including Folkbildningsterror and Who Will Fuck Daddy?\, both screening in the Festival – are always personal\, political\, and unlike anything else you’re likely to see.  Collaborating with groups of friends\, his work is always inventive and anarchic – and often really funny as well. In this workshop\, Lasse will discuss his newest film\, which he describes as a dirty\, pleasurable\, experimental\, and occult tribute to alternative masculinities\, and a postpatriarchal affirmation of transgender infinite wisdom. Lasse hopes to produce part of this film in Glasgow during and after SQIFF\, so come along to hear more about it\, and perhaps even get a chance to join in with the ongoing work of this brilliant and talented director! \nAges 18+ only. \nACCESS: Level access at entrance of CCA with lift up to second floor for Clubroom. Accessible toilets available. If you would like to attend and require BSL interpretation\, please email info@sqiff.org and we will book this for you. \nThis workshop is FREE with booking in advance recommended. SUMMARY:Lesbian with a Movie Camera
DESCRIPTION:As part of LGBT History Month Scotland\, we present a lovingly-curated selection of indie\, punk\, and DIY lesbian shorts from across half a century of filmmaking\, featuring known names and unsung (s)heroes alike.  Ranging from the hilarious to the experimental\, the programme features a rare screening of Caroline Sheldon’s witty and subversive 17 Rooms (Or What Do Lesbians Do in Bed?). Scheduled in 1986 for a prime slot on Channel Four’s pioneering In The Pink season\, Sheldon’s film was scandalously pulled at the last minute – not because of any explicit content but because it was thought audiences might object to its title. \nThis is a free\, unticketed event; donations are very much appreciated and will collected after the screening.  The screening is on the ground floor of our venue Transmission. Accessible toilet available. Films shown will include captions for better D/deaf and hard of hearing access.

SUMMARY:LUX Scotland and SQIFF present: Dani Leventhal
DESCRIPTION:Presented by LUX Scotland in association with SQIFF and Transmission\, American artist Dani Leventhal visits Glasgow to show and discuss her recent video work. \nHer videos are disjunctive\, diaristic\, and often feature people who become the unassuming subjects of her work. Describing her working process\, Leventhal says\, “I start with a subject that I care deeply about / I concentrate on fear\, desire\, anger\, confusion\, and love. / I concentrate on the emotional relationships between humans\, humans and animals\, and humans and their environments. / I am particularly interested in the way we develop based on our experiences in childhood\, and then the process of undoing it.” \nPresenting her shorts alongside her recent collaboration Hard As Opal with Jared Buckhiester\, Leventhal will also present a preview of her in-progress work\, Strangely Ordinary This Devotion\, a collaboration with Sheilah Wilson. \nThis is event is free and unticketed. \nACCESS: Transmission is accessible for wheelchair users via Trongate 103. Please enter at the street entrance to Trongate 103 and take the lift to the basement floor. Accessible toilets available. SQIFF has a policy of screening films with English subtitles or captions for deaf and hard of hearing access but unfortunately we are not able to do so on this occasion – big apologies for this.

DESCRIPTION:Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Inside Out ventures inside the mind to find out. Platform Glasgow is proud to present a FREE screening of Disney Pixar’s original new film as part of this year’s Scottish Queer International Film Festival. \nBased in Headquarters\, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind\, five Emotions are hard at work\, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler)\, whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety\, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. SUMMARY:SQIFF Schools: Pride
DESCRIPTION:Summer\, 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. In London\, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support but the activists are not deterred and set off in a minibus to a mining village in Wales to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. \nRobert Kincaid\, a member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners who was present at events in 1984\, will join us for a Q&A after the film. \nPresented in association with LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThe event is suitable for Secondary 4-6. The film contains some strong language and sexual references. We are screening the film with English subtitles for accessibility. If anyone attending requires BSL interpretation for the introduction\, please let us know when booking. \nThe event is free for all schools\, youth groups\, and colleges. To book a place\, email helen@sqiff.org with the name of your school or group\, the name of the teacher supervising the trip\, the number of pupils you would like to bring\, and whether there are any accessibility requirements for anyone attending.
