SUMMARY:Queer Horror: A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
DESCRIPTION:Described as ‘The Gayest Horror Movie Ever Made’\, Freddy’s Revenge is the first of many sequels to Wes Craven’s 1984 classic A Nightmare on Elm Street. Maligned for being cheap trash on its release\, the second film in the franchise has achieved cult status for its gloriously campy queer subtext. Virginal teenager\, Jesse\, feels he has something inside him that needs to ‘come out\,’ which turns out\, of course\, to be Freddy Krueger. Beyond this unsubtle\, central metaphor\, Jesse has a suspiciously close relationship with his male friend\, a sadomasochistic gym teacher who literally gets stripped and whipped\, and a supposed love interest who looks like Meryl Streep. \nIntroduced by Jordan Phillips\, queer horror maestro at Queen Margaret University. \nACCESS: Level access with Cinema plus accessible toilets all on ground floor (CCA). Film screening with subtitles for D/deaf and hard of hearing access. Hearing loop available. BSL interpretation for introduction. English language film.\n \n£5 / £4 conc / Free for unemployed and asylum seekers. Festival pass £40 / £30 conc. All prices include booking fee. \nTo book tickets\, please use the button below or call CCA box office on +44 (0)141 352 4900. \n[bra_button text=’Buy Tickets’ url=’https://ccaglasgow.ticketsolve.com/shows/873560941/events’ target=’_blank’ size=’medium’ style=’rounded’ color=’pink’]

SUMMARY:SQIFF Closer: Real Boy
DESCRIPTION:‘I just want to be loved by my family\,’ says Bennett\, a nineteen year old trans man. ‘But for my family\, it’s not as simple as that.’ Ben’s mum is having a hard time coming to terms with her child changing. His dad and sister no longer speak to him. But thanks to social media\, Ben meets a whole network of people who support him\, including best friend Dylan and Joe Stevens\, a trans musician. With their support\, Ben comes to terms with his identity and begins to build bridges with his family. Real Boy is raw and breathtakingly honest\, creating a sense of awe at the resilience and courage of its subjects. \nPreceded by the presentation of our Festival awards\, the SQIFFies. SUMMARY:To Russia with Love
DESCRIPTION:Leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi\, a law banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors” – which could potentially be enforced against any LGBT person if they “flaunted” their status – was enacted in Russia. Human rights activists and LGBT people involved in the Games contemplated what to do about the situation. To Russia with Love documents their responses and reactions\, speaking to a variety of contributors\, including current and former Olympians and local LGBT campaigners. \nFollowed by a panel discussion on the political situation surrounding events. In partnership with LEAP Sports Scotland\, Abertay LGBT Society\, and Allsorts LGBT Youth Group. \nACCESS: Hannah Maclure Centre is accessible for people using wheelchairs. There are accessible toilets next to the screening space. Awaiting further information from venue. Please contact the venue for more details in the meantime on 01382 308324. Film screening with subtitles/captions for D/deaf and hard of hearing access. If you would like to attend and require BSL interpretation for the discussion\, please email info@sqiff.org at least one week in advance.\n \nThis event is free. Book tickets via the link below to be guaranteed a space. \n[bra_button text=’Buy Tickets’ url=’https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/to-russia-with-love-film-screening-tickets-25431995784′ target=’_blank’ size=’medium’ style=’rounded’ color=’pink’]

SUMMARY:SQIFF Shorts: Pull Yourself Together
DESCRIPTION:*SOLD OUT – As this is a free event\, it’s likely not everyone who has booked will turn up\, so it’s possible to come along on the night without booking and see if there’s a space. SQIFF presents a collection of short films with authentic perspectives on the subject\, covering a range of topics and providing insights from a variety of individuals who have had personal encounters with mental health problems. Following the screening\, members of Glasgow’s LGBTQ+ community will discuss their own experiences\, including the stigma often surrounding such issues. \nIn partnership with LGBT Health and Wellbeing. \nContent note: discussion of suicide and self-harm. \nACCESS: Level access at entrance and then three stairs or a ramp to access the screening area. Accessible toilet next to the bar back down the stairs or ramp (The Glad Cafe). English language films. Films screening with subtitles for D/deaf and hard of hearing access. SUMMARY:LUX Scotland and SQIFF present: Dani Leventhal
DESCRIPTION:Presented by LUX Scotland in association with SQIFF and Transmission\, American artist Dani Leventhal visits Glasgow to show and discuss her recent video work. \nHer videos are disjunctive\, diaristic\, and often feature people who become the unassuming subjects of her work. Describing her working process\, Leventhal says\, “I start with a subject that I care deeply about / I concentrate on fear\, desire\, anger\, confusion\, and love. / I concentrate on the emotional relationships between humans\, humans and animals\, and humans and their environments. / I am particularly interested in the way we develop based on our experiences in childhood\, and then the process of undoing it.” \nPresenting her shorts alongside her recent collaboration Hard As Opal with Jared Buckhiester\, Leventhal will also present a preview of her in-progress work\, Strangely Ordinary This Devotion\, a collaboration with Sheilah Wilson. \nThis is event is free and unticketed. \nACCESS: Transmission is accessible for wheelchair users via Trongate 103. Please enter at the street entrance to Trongate 103 and take the lift to the basement floor. Accessible toilets available. SQIFF has a policy of screening films with English subtitles or captions for deaf and hard of hearing access but unfortunately we are not able to do so on this occasion – big apologies for this.

SUMMARY:Lesbian with a Movie Camera
DESCRIPTION:As part of LGBT History Month Scotland\, we present a lovingly-curated selection of indie\, punk\, and DIY lesbian shorts from across half a century of filmmaking\, featuring known names and unsung (s)heroes alike.  Ranging from the hilarious to the experimental\, the programme features a rare screening of Caroline Sheldon’s witty and subversive 17 Rooms (Or What Do Lesbians Do in Bed?). Scheduled in 1986 for a prime slot on Channel Four’s pioneering In The Pink season\, Sheldon’s film was scandalously pulled at the last minute – not because of any explicit content but because it was thought audiences might object to its title. \nThis is a free\, unticketed event; donations are very much appreciated and will collected after the screening.  The screening is on the ground floor of our venue Transmission. Accessible toilet available. Films shown will include captions for better D/deaf and hard of hearing access.

From captivating\, tender animations to the provocative\, exciting\, experimental\, this selection of short films showcases some SQIFF favourites made by queer people about queer people! \nACCESS: All films will be screened with subtitles to make them more accessible for D/deaf and hard of hearing audiences. SUMMARY:Fox and His Friends (Inverness)
DESCRIPTION:In 1970s West Germany\, a young working-class gay man wins the lottery and is taken advantage of by his overbearing bourgeois lover. New German Cinema superstar and queer filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder created his most explicit survey of gay culture in Fox and His Friends and stamped his trademark\, very cynical impression of human relationships onto it. Fassbinder himself plays the suggestible Fox with supporting cast featuring several from the director’s famous entourage including Harry Baer and Kurt Raab. A great chance to see a restored classic and an opportunity for those unfamiliar with the legendary filmmaker’s work to get acquainted. \nACCESS: Level access at entrance of Eden Court with Cinema space on ground floor. SUMMARY:The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin (Stornoway)
DESCRIPTION:The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin celebrates a beloved storyteller\, following his evolution from conservative son of the Old South to gay rights pioneer whose novels inspired others to reclaim their lives. Director Jennifer M. SUMMARY:SQIFF Shorts: Are We Queer Yet?
DESCRIPTION:A selection of shorts asking if – and challenging the notion – that we are really queer yet. We follow LGBTQ+ people forging their own space in society and building new worlds. New communities emerge unapologetically\, from creation of the trans flag to voguing on a roof in New York. One character states\, “We are powerful\, we are those bitches\, we are confident\, we are not the victim\, bitch\, we are the predator. It is our time\, you live in our world. Either you respect it or you don’t.” Together we are bringing about change. You are not alone and you belong. Let’s find our queer future. \nAfter the films\, novelist Zoë Strachan – whose Anthology of Scottish LGBT Writing\, Out There\, carved space for a new generation of queer voices – will be in conversation with filmmaker Asten Holmes-Elliott. \nACCESS: Level access at entrance of CCA with Cinema space on ground floor.
