What’s it like to hold hands with a complete stranger and walk through the city centre? \nPerformance art and mobile technology converge in Walking:Holding\, a meditative documentary that journeys through urban landscapes exploring identity and intimacy in public space with a focus on LGBTQ+ experiences. \nThis film is a response to Glasgow based artist Rosana Cade’s award-winning interactive performance of the same name\, which invites audience members to embark on a carefully designed route through a town whilst holding hands with a series of different local participants. Shot entirely on mobile phones\, the film follows the performance to 6 towns across the UK between June and November 2016\, bookended by the Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump. DESCRIPTION:Pink Excavation is Natasha Lall’s first feature length film. With Lall as the narrator and cameos from local queers Mina Baird and Junie Latte\, this DIY film explores the preservation of queer histories in Glasgow\, 2518. Pink Excavation sees Lall excavate 90s-00s technological relics that are outdated in the 2500s and become frustrated at their lack of understanding on how to access information from these ancient technologies. Upon interactions with an archaeologist and a ghost Lall discusses whether or not the poor archiving of LGBT culture has a positive impact on the queer community. SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz (an asexual reading)
DESCRIPTION:1939 Hollywood fantasy movie\, The Wizard of Oz\, is known for its strong association with gay male culture\, thought to be the origin for homosexual men using the code ‘Friend of Dorothy’ to identify themselves to each other from the 1950s onwards. However\, other readings are possible. Academic writer Alexander Doty saw Dorothy as a lesbian\, torn between her attraction to the femme Glinda and butch Wicked Witch of the West. Meanwhile\, internet user ‘Spoofmaster’ posted a reading of the film online which regards Dorothy as asexual because she chooses gay non-human companions – that’s the Scarecrow\, Tinman\, and Cowardly Lion – whilst in Oz. DESCRIPTION:Marina (Daniela Vega) is planning a future with her boyfriend Orlando (Francisco Reyes) when he suddenly becomes ill and passes away. She is devastated and immediately feels the sting of discrimination as a transgender woman when hospital staff and Orlando’s ex-wife and son challenge her right to grieve and the viability of her lost relationship. Marina is defiant in the face of oppression\, though\, as the film follows her around with stunning fantasy set pieces revealing her inner life. Lead actor Daniela Vega collaborated with director Sebastián Lelio on the script to bring an authentic trans experience to the story. DESCRIPTION:“Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives\,” but Kena and Ziki long for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their families\, the girls resist and remain close friends\, supporting each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them\, the two girls will be forced to choose between happiness and safety. Rafiki made international news after being banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board for its homosexual theme and promotion of lesbianism. Director Wanuri Kahiu subsequently sued the Kenyan government.
