SUMMARY:SQIFF x The Social Hub Movie Night: Nina's Heavenly Delights (20th Anniversary)
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nSQIFF are excited to announce another collaboration with the Social Hub for this year’s Pride Hub event. This year we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of a queer\, South Asian classic set right here in Glasgow\, Nina’s Heavenly Delights. The film follows Nina’s return to her hometown of Glasgow to save her late father’s struggling curry house. Nina pairs up with childhood friend and chef Lisa to save the business and let’s just say things get a bit ‘spicy’. Expect laughs\, bright colours and a celebration of Scottish Asian cuisine.\n\nAlongside this feature we will be screening the short Bhangra Jig also by director Pratibha Parmar. This short film captures the high energy music genre of Bhangra being enjoyed\, again\, right here in Glasgow.\n\nThe films will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with Pratibha and SQIFF curator Nat Lall. We would love for you to join us for a celebration of the rich culture right here on our doorstep.\n\nTickets are Free with a donation option. To book your ticket for this event\, click here. \n  \nAccessibility \nWe aim to be as accessible as possible\, please get in touch if there’s anything we can do to make this event more accessible to you. This programme has: \n\nAn age recommendation of N/C 16+.\nEnglish language descriptive subtitles for the films and pre-recorded Q&A.\nText on screen provided for the introduction.\nThe Social Hub is wheelchair accessible\, with gender neutral toilets.\nPlease let us know at check in if you don’t want to be in pictures or video.\n\nThis screening is 98 minutes long with an introduction and pre-recorded Q&A. \n  \nFilms in this programme include: \nBhangra Jig\, Dir. Pratibha Parmar\, 1990\, United Kingdom\, 4 min \nA young South Asian woman walks through the city of Glasgow\, once the second largest city of the British Empire. Her eyes reflect on the wealth symbolised in the textures of the city’s architecture. Signs of Empire ever present in the stone freizes\, imposing cast iron statues of dead colonialists\, ornate pillars and the opulence of marble. Against histories of colonial carnage\, Asian people build our communities and cultures\, forging identities of self-affirmation. Against echoes of colonial memories is the living memory of today’s cultures of resistance: through dance and music\, young Asian people celebrate desire and self pride. Bhangra Jig disrupts dominant notions of European culture and offers new meanings of what constitutes national cultures and identities\, of what it means to be Asian\, British and European. It was a four-minute television intervention piece\, commissioned by Channel 4 celebrating Glasgow as the European cultural capital for 1990. \n  \nNina’s Heavenly Delights\, Dir. Pratibha Parmar\, 2006\, United Kingdom\, 94 min \nA feisty young woman returns to Glasgow to run her deceased father’s curry house. \n  \nDonate: \nDonate to SQIFF via PayPal or sign up to one of our four Patreon tiers to support our work and show us you’re a big SQIFF fan 🌈✨ \n  \nImage Credit: Nina’s Heavenly Delights\, Dir. SUMMARY:Girlfriends
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nLok\, a 34-year-old filmmaker from Macau\, has been drifting through Hong Kong’s film industry. Although she has already directed a feature film\, her life remains unstable\, her next project has stalled\, and her girlfriend Bei Bei is pushing for them to get married\, buy a house\, and settle down. Facing multiple pressures\, Lok revisits different moments in her past: when she was studying in Taiwan aged 22\, and when she was growing up in Macau aged 17. In this female-centred coming-of-age drama\, director Tracy Choi asks what it means to be true to oneself\, exploring the ways in which past experiences shape the present. Unusual in its geographic scope\, use of a reverse-chronological timeline\, and apparently autobiographical elements\, Girlfriends is a romantic\, intelligent reflection on queer identity. \nPresented in partnership with Queer East. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. SUMMARY:A Frown Gone Mad
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nBotox\, Revolax\, Sculptra\, Hyaron and Juvederm: all sorts of products\, perhaps not all entirely legal\, sell like hot cakes in Bouba’s Lebanese beauty salon. Skilfully\, though not always gently\, she jabs a constant stream of clients with all kinds of injectables to temporarily reduce their facial wrinkles and frown lines.  \nDirector Omar Mismar films the patients from a fixed position as they recline on the white plastic-wrapped treatment table. Young and old\, women and men\, from housewives to hip influencers\, it seems like the whole country is voluntarily undergoing these painful and gory treatments\, all of which are shown in closeup.  \nDuring the treatment\, the threat of war is a regular topic. Will war break out? Will you go and fight? Mixedup memories of wars and explosions reveal how violence has been an almost constant presence in the lives of Beirut’s inhabitants for decades.  \nBouba’s medicine is rough humour and a magic injection. As one customer aptly puts it: “Most people in line here are tired and unhappy. Bouba takes the pain from inside and works on it from the outside.”  \nThe screening will open with an extended introduction by a Glasgow-based artist. \nCurated by Huss. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. SUMMARY:Adam’s Apple
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nAdam’s Apple is an intimate\, collaborative documentary told through the dual perspectives of Adam\, a transgender teen\, and his mother\, visual artist Amy Jenkins\, that offers an authentic and tender counterpoint to the hostility facing trans youth today. Adam’s journey balances the milestones of gender transition with the rhythms of adolescence. As Adam asserts his identity and steps out into the world\, his parents grapple with the challenges of raising a teen while learning to let go. Through a visually poetic approach\, the film transforms a deeply personal archive\, collected over two decades\, into a powerful\, joyful testament to the beauty and difficulty of reckoning with profound change. \nAfter the screening\, Adam Sieswerda will join SQIFF Director Indigo Korres in conversation. \nPresented in partnership with Scottish Documentary Institute. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income. SUMMARY:Yapping Out Loud: Contagious Thoughts from an Unrepentant Whore
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nOn May 1\, 2002\, transsexual sex worker and performance artist Mirha-Soleil Ross delivered a powerful monologue confronting anti-prostitution rhetoric and campaigns\, exposing their often devastating effects on sex workers’ lives\, rights\, and working conditions. Combining sharp political commentary with striking performance documentation and hard-hitting animal rights footage\, the film moves between anger\, wit\, and resistance. Ross challenges the moral assumptions underpinning campaigns against sex work\, while drawing connections between different forms of oppression and control. Fierce\, provocative\, and uncompromising\, the work becomes a manifesto for bodily autonomy\, solidarity\, and freedom for all. \nAfter the screening\, Jaye Hudson of TGirlsonFilm will be in conversation with writer\, filmmaker and trans daughter of Ross\, Morgan M Page\, discussing Ross’s prolific oeuvre\, including her video work\, trans film festival\, and the iconic recently republished zine Gender Trash from Hell. \nCurated by Jaye Hudson and Morgan M Page. SUMMARY:Closing Gala: Hunky Jesus
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nJoin us for the closing event of the Scottish Queer International Film Festival as we celebrate another year of exceptional queer cinema. This year’s closing film is Hunky Jesus\, a documentary capturing the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s iconic take on Easter Sunday. The sisters celebrate Easter with a massive drag competition in which people compete to be the hunkiest Jesus. It documents how community and camp can be powerful tools for resistance and solidarity. Essentially it’s an extremely fun\, silly work of queer cinema. It’s a guaranteed mood booster. And\, a fantastic way to wrap up another great year of SQIFF.
\nThe film will be followed by a panel discussion with House of Nunsense\, Glasgow’s own chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.  \nThe winner of Best Scottish Short will be announced at the start of this event. Please join us in congratulating the winner and all our filmmakers on another year of SQIFF. \nCurated by Nat Lall. \n  \nClick here to book your ticket for this event. \nTickets are on a pay what you can sliding scale of FREE\, £4\, £8\, £12\, £16\, or £20\, in order to make SQIFF more accessible to those on a low income.
