SUMMARY:SQIFF Schools: Out (CCA)
DESCRIPTION:So much of young people’s experience of sexual and gender identity in the present day comes via the internet. However\, the old pain and awkwardness of ‘coming out’ to friends and family remains the same. This new documentary from French director Denis Parrot combines the phenomenon of online queer culture with the intimacy of young people’s revelations about themselves. Out presents a collection of compelling videos posted online by young LGBTQ+ people\, showing us their experience of telling loved ones about their identity. \nFollowed by a discussion hosted by LGBT Youth Scotland about the experiences of LGBTQ+ young people communicating their identity to family and friends and finding acceptance. The event is kindly sponsored by LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThis event is free and only open to schools. The film and discussion are suitable for S1-6. Please email helen@sqiff.org to book spaces. \n  \nACCESS \nFilm mostly in the English language with English language subtitles/captions. Hearing loop available. \nFilm relies on visual material to convey ideas but has a lot of voiceover and commentary\, so is relatively accessible for blind and partially sighted audiences. Large print versions of handouts available. \nCCA has good access for wheelchair users. Click here for more details on venue access.

SUMMARY:The Owls at GFAF
DESCRIPTION:Two OWL (older\, wiser lesbian) couples accidentally kill a younger woman and hide the body but their dark secret comes back to haunt them in Cheryl Dunye’s experimental\, collaborative movie\, The Owls. Featuring Dunye’s trademark\, self-reflexive style where both characters and actors create video diaries adjacent to the main narrative\, The Owls also attempted collective filmmaking with cast and crew encouraged to pitch in ideas.\n \nThose involved form a roll call of lesbian film excellence with Guinevere Turner\, Lisa Gornick\, V.S. Brodie\, and Dunye playing the ageing\, bitter queers\, and Sarah Schulman\, Alex Juhasz\, and Campbell X amongst others working behind the scenes. Dunye’s fourth feature film as director is an under-appreciated examination of lesbian culture and aesthetics with a good dose of crime movie genre fun thrown in. \n \nThe film will be introduced by SQIFF’s Helen Wright. Screening as part of Glasgow Feminist Arts Festival\, taking place 15 to 18 November.\n \nTickets are priced on a sliding scale £0-£8 depending on what you can afford. To book\, please use the button below. \n[bra_button text=’Buy Tickets’ url=’https://ccaglasgow.ticketsolve.com/shows/873598169′ target=’_blank’ size=’medium’ style=’rounded’ color=’pink’]\n \n  \nACCESS \nFilm in the English language with English language subtitles/captions for access. Hearing loop available. \nFilm relies to some extent on visual material to convey ideas but contains a lot of explanatory dialogue. Large print versions of handouts available. \nCCA has good access for wheelchair users. Click here for more details on venue access. \nComfy seating (bean bags) available. If you would like to reserve this\, please contact access@sqiff.org.

SUMMARY:120 BPM Preview plus Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Revisiting elements of his own experience\, Robin Campillo has created a bustling fresco of the personalities and politics of the ACT UP Paris LGBTQI community during the 1990s. The sense of urgency\, authenticity and attention to detail is exemplary as individual stories come into sharper focus. We follow hot-headed Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) as he falls under the spell of gravely handsome newcomer Nathan (Arnaud Valois). A moving\, lump-in-the-throat love story is matched by a celebration of the power of activism to awaken an indifferent world in this superb drama. \n120 BPM screens at GFT 6th to 12th April. Join us for this special preview screening followed by a Q&A with ACT UP London activist\, theatre maker and single mother Ray Malone – personally described as ‘scum’ by Nigel Farage – along with other guests tbc. \nACCESS: The film is in the French language with English subtitles.
