DESCRIPTION:🔊 Listen to this Event Page\n        \n    \nWe are delighted that this screening will be introduced by Indigo Korres\, Director of SQIFF. \nOne of the definitive cult horror films\, Sleepaway Camp is a trashy teen slasher in the Friday the 13th mould. And while slasher films can be broadly remembered for their restrictive heteronormativity\, Sleepaway Camp is particularly notable for its exploration of queer themes. Sleepaway Camp is not subtle or necessarily in good taste\, and often plays into problematic tropes\, but the film has nonetheless been reclaimed and celebrated by queer audiences in the years since its release. \nShy\, mute Angela (an iconic performance by Felissa Rose) goes to stay at Camp Arawak with her cousin Ricky. Unlike other teen slashers\, Sleepaway Camp’s cast of campers are mostly made up of actual teenagers\, and the scenes of them hanging out and misbehaving feel refreshingly authentic. The volleyball coach spots Ace on her first day\, and invites her to try out for the team. She is initially no good at the sport and socially ostracised\, but things begin to change when she falls for the highly motivated team captain\, Jana\, who dislikes her because she sees her as a threat. But the girls and their teammates must nonetheless join forces: not only to successfully compete in competitions\, but also to face up against a more disturbing\, insidious threat. The film is stylistically influenced by the French New Wave and American New Cinema\, notably Jean-Luc Godard and Arthur Penn. Sarah is a skier and activist policymaker; Andraya is a track star; and Mack is the Texas State Champion in wrestling. This documentary takes us into their personal lives and showcases the challenges faced by trans teens in sports. \nIt is an incredible exploration into intersectional identities in sports.
