DESCRIPTION:So much of young people’s experience of sexual and gender identity in the present day comes via the internet. However\, the old pain and awkwardness of ‘coming out’ to friends and family remains the same. This new documentary from French director Denis Parrot combines the phenomenon of online queer culture with the intimacy of young people’s revelations about themselves. Out presents a collection of compelling videos posted online by young LGBTQ+ people\, showing us their experience of telling loved ones about their identity. \nFollowed by a discussion hosted by LGBT Youth Scotland about the experiences of LGBTQ+ young people communicating their identity to family and friends and finding acceptance. DESCRIPTION:On her way to the store with a group of friends\, trans woman Chrishaun Reed “CeCe” McDonald was brutally attacked and in defending her life\, a man was killed. After a coercive interrogation\, CeCe was incarcerated in a men’s prison in Minnesota. An international campaign to free CeCe garnered significant support from media and activists\, including actress Laverne Cox. Cox signed on as executive producer of FREE CeCe!\, committed to exploring the role race\, class\, and gender played in the case. In the end\, CeCe emerged not only as a survivor but also as a leader. \nFollowed by a discussion with Chryssy Hunter from Bent Bars Project\, a letter writing scheme for LGBTQ+ people in prison in the UK. DESCRIPTION:Fred Barney Taylor’s documentary offers a portrait of Samuel R. Delany\, black gay man\, radical\, and revered author of science fiction novels. Delany is also a well-regarded literary critic and academic with a candid and iconoclastic approach. There are also still tickets left for our screening of Catherine’s new film\, Chavela. \nFounder and Director of Aubin Pictures\, Catherine Gund is an Emmy-nominated producer\, director\, writer\, and activist. Her work focuses on sustainable social transformation\, sexuality and gender\, HIV/AIDS\, reproductive health\, and other social justice issues. She works actively with numerous organisations to this end and co-founded Third Wave Foundation\, which supports young women and transgender youth\, and DIVA TV\, an affinity group of ACT UP/NY. She was founding director of BENT TV\, a video workshop for LGBT youth. SUMMARY:Queer Revolution: Carlos Jauregui: The Unforgettable Fag
DESCRIPTION:A key figure in the gay rights movement of 1980s and 90s South America\, Carlos Jáuregui became politicised after witnessing mass demonstrations and early pride marches taking place in France and the United States. Returning home to find street arrests and mass raids on gay nightclubs becoming alarmingly frequent\, he grew convinced that visibility and direct\, collective action were the only viable means of resistance. Lucas Santa Ana’s fascinating documentary follows Jáuregui’s story\, from his becoming the first leader of the pioneering Argentine Homosexuality Community organisation in 1984 to his death from AIDS in 1996. \nACCESS: Level access at entrance of CCA with Cinema space on ground floor. DESCRIPTION:We present another selection of LGBTQ+ work made in Scotland\, representing a variety of styles\, subject matter\, and identities. DESCRIPTION:Tchinda is one of the most beloved women on Cape Verde\, especially after coming out as trans in a local newspaper in 1998. Since then\, her name has become the term used by locals to refer to queer Cape Verdeans. In the month leading up to Carnival\, the slow-paced atmosphere of the island transforms into a frenzied hustle as thousands flock to the streets.
