But between Stonewall\, the feminist movement\, and the experimental cinema of the 1970s\, they built visibility\, and transformed the social imagination about queerness. SUMMARY:Workshop: Documentary Filmmaking with Donal Mosher
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome US-based director\, photographer\, and musician Donal Mosher to Glasgow for a filmmaking workshop hosted by SQIFF and Scottish Documentary Institute. \nDonal Mosher is the collaborative director with Michael Palmieri of the award-winning documentary features October Country\, Off Label\, and The Gospel Of Eureka\, as well as the shorts Rougarouing\, Marseilles\, and Peace in the Valley. He has published fiction\, non-fiction\, and reviews for The Fanzine\, Talkhouse\, and the LAMBDA award-winning Portland Queer Anthology. His photo project The Vibrancy Is Killing Me opened in Munich\, Germany in 2015 and became the basis for Strange Gardens\, an ongoing live cinema series that has been performed at the Risk/Reward Festival\, and toured the US with Pop Up magazine. \nIn this unique 3 hour workshop Donal will explore his approach to filmmaking. DESCRIPTION:The most urgent issues surrounding identity and oppression revolve around bodies and borders. In Being Okey\, a gay Nigerian man is denied asylum in Switzerland and consequently caught between the constant fear of being sent home and hope of a life in safety. ABEO is an animation by Latinx artist Brenda M. Lopez Zepeda depicting the journey of two immigrants risking their lives to cross the Arizona desert. My Shoreline is an experimental film-poem about a disabled queer body in water\, and My Own Wings documents intersex people from around the world. Working class queer bodies and class borders are forefronted in Krissy Mahan’s All in a Day’s Work and the implication of supposed sexual boundaries is explored in Patricia Silva’s bisexual ode\, A Feeling More Than a Picture. There are also still tickets left for our screening of Catherine’s new film\, Chavela. \nFounder and Director of Aubin Pictures\, Catherine Gund is an Emmy-nominated producer\, director\, writer\, and activist. Her work focuses on sustainable social transformation\, sexuality and gender\, HIV/AIDS\, reproductive health\, and other social justice issues. She works actively with numerous organisations to this end and co-founded Third Wave Foundation\, which supports young women and transgender youth\, and DIVA TV\, an affinity group of ACT UP/NY. She was founding director of BENT TV\, a video workshop for LGBT youth. Her most recent films include Chavela (2017)\, Dispatches from Cleveland (2017)\, and Born to Fly (2014). \nIn this unique day-long workshop\, Catherine will explore her approach to making powerful\, character-centred films\, from shorts to features\, and her commitment to stories about LGBTQI communities. DESCRIPTION:SQIFF and Hidden Door collaborate to bring you a lovingly curated programme of shorts exploring queer notions of rebirth to consider how we (re)construct\, navigate and negotiate our queer identities. From captivating\, tender animations to the provocative\, exciting\, experimental\, this selection of short films showcases some SQIFF favourites made by queer people about queer people! \nACCESS: All films will be screened with subtitles to make them more accessible for D/deaf and hard of hearing audiences. Unfortunately\, we have been informed that due to the derelict and temporary nature of Hidden Door’s venue\, the cinema space will not be wheelchair accessible and we are really sorry about this. Please contact festival@hiddendoorblog.org for further information about the venue’s accessibility. \nTickets are £16 (concessions £14)\, which includes admission to all Hidden Door events on 2nd June. We have a limited amount of free tickets for those who are unemployed and for asylum seekers as well as some half price tickets (£8) for those on a low income.
