DESCRIPTION:“I just want to be loved by my family\,” says Bennett\, a 19-year-old trans man. “But for my family\, it’s not as simple as that.” Ben’s mum is having a hard time coming to terms with her child’s transition. His dad and sister no longer speak to him. But thanks to social media\, Ben meets a whole network of people who support him\, including best friend Dylan and Joe Stevens\, a trans musician. With their support\, Ben comes to terms with his identity and begins to build bridges with his family. Real Boy is raw and breathtakingly honest\, creating a sense of awe at the resilience of its subjects. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion on transgender issues led by young people from LGBT Youth Scotland\, which is kindly supporting this event. DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, local authorities in Scotland have increased care charging\, obliging people with disabilities to pay more than others to achieve the same basic human rights. Tax on Me is a hip-hop music video by filmmaker Kiana Kalantar-Hormozi and media coop responding to the Care Tax and the effect it has on people who need support. \nSophie Sexon\, performance artist and researcher based in Glasgow\, and Theresa Heath\, researcher and founder of Wotever DIY Film Festival based in London\, will join Kiana for the Tax On Me panel. DESCRIPTION:A key figure in the gay rights movement of 1980s and 90s South America\, Carlos Jáuregui became politicised after witnessing mass demonstrations and early pride marches taking place in France and the United States. Returning home to find street arrests and mass raids on gay nightclubs becoming alarmingly frequent\, he grew convinced that visibility and direct\, collective action were the only viable means of resistance. There are also still tickets left for our screening of Catherine’s new film\, Chavela. \nFounder and Director of Aubin Pictures\, Catherine Gund is an Emmy-nominated producer\, director\, writer\, and activist. Her work focuses on sustainable social transformation\, sexuality and gender\, HIV/AIDS\, reproductive health\, and other social justice issues. She works actively with numerous organisations to this end and co-founded Third Wave Foundation\, which supports young women and transgender youth\, and DIVA TV\, an affinity group of ACT UP/NY. She was founding director of BENT TV\, a video workshop for LGBT youth. Her most recent films include Chavela (2017)\, Dispatches from Cleveland (2017)\, and Born to Fly (2014). \nIn this unique day-long workshop\, Catherine will explore her approach to making powerful\, character-centred films\, from shorts to features\, and her commitment to stories about LGBTQI communities. DESCRIPTION:Fred Barney Taylor’s documentary offers a portrait of Samuel R. Delany\, black gay man\, radical\, and revered author of science fiction novels. Delany is also a well-regarded literary critic and academic with a candid and iconoclastic approach. He recounts his Harlem childhood\, experiences with psychotherapy\, and promiscuous adventures in the infamous Everard Baths and other public-sex venues. Interviews are juxtaposed with grainy home movies of Delany’s family and absorbing footage of the bridges\, streets\, trains\, and skyscrapers of the writer’s native New York. \nSamuel R.
