DESCRIPTION:Presented by LUX Scotland in association with SQIFF and Transmission\, American artist Dani Leventhal visits Glasgow to show and discuss her recent video work. \nHer videos are disjunctive\, diaristic\, and often feature people who become the unassuming subjects of her work. Describing her working process\, Leventhal says\, “I start with a subject that I care deeply about / I concentrate on fear\, desire\, anger\, confusion\, and love. / I concentrate on the emotional relationships between humans\, humans and animals\, and humans and their environments. / I am particularly interested in the way we develop based on our experiences in childhood\, and then the process of undoing it.” \nPresenting her shorts alongside her recent collaboration Hard As Opal with Jared Buckhiester\, Leventhal will also present a preview of her in-progress work\, Strangely Ordinary This Devotion\, a collaboration with Sheilah Wilson. \nThis is event is free and unticketed. \nACCESS: Transmission is accessible for wheelchair users via Trongate 103. DESCRIPTION:Leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi\, a law banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors” – which could potentially be enforced against any LGBT person if they “flaunted” their status – was enacted in Russia. Human rights activists and LGBT people involved in the Games contemplated what to do about the situation. To Russia with Love documents their responses and reactions\, speaking to a variety of contributors\, including current and former Olympians and local LGBT campaigners. \nFollowed by a panel discussion on the political situation surrounding events. His dad and sister no longer speak to him. But thanks to social media\, Ben meets a whole network of people who support him\, including best friend Dylan and Joe Stevens\, a trans musician. With their support\, Ben comes to terms with his identity and begins to build bridges with his family. SUMMARY:Queer Horror: The Haunting
DESCRIPTION:Dr. John Markway\, an anthropologist with an interest in psychic phenomena\, takes two specially selected women to Hill House\, a reportedly haunted mansion. Eleanor\, a lonely\, eccentric woman with a supernatural event in her past\, and the bold (and all but openly lesbian) Theodora\, who has ESP\, join John and the mansion’s heir\, cynical Luke. They are immediately overwhelmed by strange sounds and events\, and Eleanor comes to believe the house is alive and speaking directly to her. The Haunting is a pretty solid argument for the underlying queerness of the Hollywood horror movie aesthetic. \nScreening with short film Cheat (2 mins). DESCRIPTION:We present another selection of LGBTQ+ work made in Scotland\, representing a variety of styles\, subject matter\, and identities. DESCRIPTION:When Marit Östberg finally had enough time to edit the footage she shot in 2011\, it was already four years old. And\, by then\, her idea of a mockumentary on how to (and how not to) make queer porn had quietly changed into something different: a nostalgic look at nostalgia and a way to rewrite her own history. Now\, she could look back at the idealism of the community she had lived and worked in\, but from the perspective of knowing how things had turned out. The result became something beautiful and thoughtful and funny and sad – and still very\, very hot. DESCRIPTION:Summer\, 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. In London\, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support but the activists are not deterred and set off in a minibus to a mining village in Wales to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. \nRobert Kincaid\, a member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners who was present at events in 1984\, will join us for a Q&A after the film. \nPresented in association with LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThe event is suitable for Secondary 4-6. The film contains some strong language and sexual references. We are screening the film with English subtitles for accessibility. DESCRIPTION:Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF) hosts a fun and informal evening of open conversation around queer film; what it is\, what it isn’t\, what we’d like it to be and where the mainstream film industry is getting it all kinds of wrong… We want to know what the successes and failings of queer film events in Scotland are and how we can communicate with straight\, cisgender film exhibitors and audiences. \nWe invite filmmakers and film lovers to submit their own short films or clips (max 10 minutes total) to be screened alongside the discussion in advance of the screening.
