DESCRIPTION:Sad Girl Cinema is an ongoing documentary film project exploring mental health narratives in screen culture created by queer writers Claire Biddles and Bethany Rose Lamont and designed by Maggie Webster. SUMMARY:Collect:if Presents: Gaysian Superheroes
DESCRIPTION:A focus on the work of two British-South Asian queer women filmmakers across different generations. Activist and director Pratibha Parmar’s work centres on gender\, race\, and LGBT issues. Her groundbreaking Khush (1991)\, for instance\, portrays lesbian women and gay men in India and the Indian diaspora discussing acceptance and embracing of their sexuality. We explore Pratibha’s prolific output alongside that of emerging London-based artist Seema Mattu\, who uses digital media to present an awareness of the overlooked ethnic self in regards to various degrees of minoritisation. \nWe are delighted Seema will join us to discuss her work. DESCRIPTION:“Failing is something queers do and always have done exceptionally well…” Jack Halberstam’s 2011 book The Queer Art of Failure explores how failure can be embraced as a form of resistance to the demands of heterosexual\, capitalist society. At this event\, we celebrate and assert our right to fail at life as individuals and communities. DESCRIPTION:Lasse Långström’s films – including Folkbildningsterror and Who Will Fuck Daddy?\, both screening in the Festival – are always personal\, political\, and unlike anything else you’re likely to see.  Collaborating with groups of friends\, his work is always inventive and anarchic – and often really funny as well. In this workshop\, Lasse will discuss his newest film\, which he describes as a dirty\, pleasurable\, experimental\, and occult tribute to alternative masculinities\, and a postpatriarchal affirmation of transgender infinite wisdom. DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, local authorities in Scotland have increased care charging\, obliging people with disabilities to pay more than others to achieve the same basic human rights. Tax on Me is a hip-hop music video by filmmaker Kiana Kalantar-Hormozi and media coop responding to the Care Tax and the effect it has on people who need support. \nSophie Sexon\, performance artist and researcher based in Glasgow\, and Theresa Heath\, researcher and founder of Wotever DIY Film Festival based in London\, will join Kiana for the Tax On Me panel. DESCRIPTION:“I just want to be loved by my family\,” says Bennett\, a 19-year-old trans man. “But for my family\, it’s not as simple as that.” Ben’s mum is having a hard time coming to terms with her child’s transition. His dad and sister no longer speak to him. But thanks to social media\, Ben meets a whole network of people who support him\, including best friend Dylan and Joe Stevens\, a trans musician. With their support\, Ben comes to terms with his identity and begins to build bridges with his family. Real Boy is raw and breathtakingly honest\, creating a sense of awe at the resilience of its subjects. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion on transgender issues led by young people from LGBT Youth Scotland\, which is kindly supporting this event. DESCRIPTION:Leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi\, a law banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors” – which could potentially be enforced against any LGBT person if they “flaunted” their status – was enacted in Russia. Human rights activists and LGBT people involved in the Games contemplated what to do about the situation. DESCRIPTION:Summer\, 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. In London\, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support but the activists are not deterred and set off in a minibus to a mining village in Wales to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. \nRobert Kincaid\, a member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners who was present at events in 1984\, will join us for a Q&A after the film. \nPresented in association with LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThe event is suitable for Secondary 4-6. The film contains some strong language and sexual references. We are screening the film with English subtitles for accessibility. DESCRIPTION:Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF) hosts a fun and informal evening of open conversation around queer film; what it is\, what it isn’t\, what we’d like it to be and where the mainstream film industry is getting it all kinds of wrong… We want to know what the successes and failings of queer film events in Scotland are and how we can communicate with straight\, cisgender film exhibitors and audiences. \nWe invite filmmakers and film lovers to submit their own short films or clips (max 10 minutes total) to be screened alongside the discussion in advance of the screening. Please send these to alice@sqiff.org. For accessibility reasons we will require all clips be subtitled or captioned.
