DESCRIPTION:London-based curator and artist Rabz Lansiquot screens their new moving image essay where did we land\, an ongoing experiment interrogating the effect of images of anti-black violence produced and reproduced in film and media\, and parts 1 and 2 of artist Zinzi Minott’s Fi Dem Series\, a continued investigation into Blackness and Diaspora made annually on the anniversary of the Empire Windrush docking in the UK on June 22nd 1948. SUMMARY:SQIFF Schools: Norfolk Trans Youth: Respecting & Understanding Differences
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by Mancroft Advice Project\, a Norwich-based charity\, and created by Scottish filmmaker Nicole O’Reilly\, Norfolk Trans Youth: Respecting & Understanding Differences gives a voice to young trans people. Incorporating interviews with trans youth in Norfolk\, O’Reilly’s debut feature gives its participants space to explain transness in their own words. Issues of discrimination\, visibility\, and media representation are discussed. Norfolk Trans Youth uses an eclectic pallet of stylistic techniques\, attempting to find a new way to use the documentary format to reflect trans experiences. Merging factual documentary with experimental techniques\, this is a visually inventive film centring a group often marginalised in conversations about their personhood. \nDirector Nicole O’Reilly will join us for a Q&A after the screening. Clash is a short experimental documentary by queer Iraqi non-binary filmmaker Amrou Al-Khadi critiquing the lack of diversity in on-screen representation in Britain today. Iconic transgender artist and activist\, Marsha “Pay it No Mind” Johnson\, and her life in the hours before she ignited the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City are depicted in Happy Birthday\, Marsha!. \nThe event will be hosted by Samar Ziadat\, curator\, activist\, and co-founder of Dardishi\, with a discussion with local QTIPOC artists and activists following the screening. \nFREE ENTRY (no need to sign up\, just come along on the night) \nACCESS \nFilms in the English language with captions for Deaf and Hard of Hearing access. However\, the old pain and awkwardness of ‘coming out’ to friends and family remains the same. This new documentary from French director Denis Parrot combines the phenomenon of online queer culture with the intimacy of young people’s revelations about themselves. Out presents a collection of compelling videos posted online by young LGBTQ+ people\, showing us their experience of telling loved ones about their identity. \nFollowed by a discussion hosted by LGBT Youth Scotland about the experiences of LGBTQ+ young people communicating their identity to family and friends and finding acceptance. SUMMARY:Workshop: Exploring LGBTQ Experiences of Sexual Violence
DESCRIPTION:SQIFF partners with Forth Valley Rape Crisis Centre to offer an interactive workshop which explores the impacts of sexual violence on LGBTQ people\, and considers how to improve the support available to the queer community from third sector feminist services. Discussion will focus on intersections of gender\, sexuality\, and sexual violence generally rather than talking about personal experiences. However\, support information will be provided at the beginning and end of the session. Although this workshop is interactive\, there will be no pressure to actively participate. Despite the political rivalry between their families\, the girls resist and remain close friends\, supporting each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them\, the two girls will be forced to choose between happiness and safety. Rafiki made international news after being banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board for its homosexual theme and promotion of lesbianism. DESCRIPTION:SQIFF’s Helen Wright presents a screening-performance looking at the work of DIY queer filmmakers Krissy Mahan and Nakshatra Bagwe whilst joined by the filmmakers via the interwebs for a live conversation. \nKrissy Mahan and her alter ego Faggotgirl – based in New York – have been making movies using humour as a feminist tool for 25 years. Mahan’s movies centre the social failures around accessibility\, gender identity\, mental health\, immigration\, and working class post-industrial cities. \nNakshatra Bagwe is a gay rights activist and filmmaker from Mumbai who started making zero budget films focused on homosexuality and queer community awareness at the age of 22. Both artists will discuss the ideas behind filmmaking with a DIY ethos. DESCRIPTION:On her way to the store with a group of friends\, trans woman Chrishaun Reed “CeCe” McDonald was brutally attacked and in defending her life\, a man was killed. After a coercive interrogation\, CeCe was incarcerated in a men’s prison in Minnesota. An international campaign to free CeCe garnered significant support from media and activists\, including actress Laverne Cox. Cox signed on as executive producer of FREE CeCe!\, committed to exploring the role race\, class\, and gender played in the case. In the end\, CeCe emerged not only as a survivor but also as a leader. \nFollowed by a discussion with Chryssy Hunter from Bent Bars Project\, a letter writing scheme for LGBTQ+ people in prison in the UK.
