DESCRIPTION:🔊 Listen to this Event Page\n        \n     \n  \nOur July session has been developed in partnership with the Scottish Documentary Institute. \nDuring this session\, we will screen Big Moves\, a short film directed by Glasgow based\, queer working-class filmmaker Sarah Grant: “After a lifetime of being told that she\, as a fat person\, could not dance (and believing it)\, Glasgow filmmaker Sarah Grant was very surprised to learn when doing dance classes over zoom in the pandemic (with the camera off\, of course)\, that this was a big fat lie.” \nScreening time: 14 minutes \nBig Moves was developed through SDI’s Bridging the Gap programme\, which will be opening a call out for applications soon. Come along as we watch the film and then hold conversation space with Alexandra Colta\, SDI’s head of Talent Development & Distribution. \nSDI nurtures filmmakers and supports author-driven\, compelling\, thought-provoking documentaries for the big screen. One of their programmes\, Bridging the Gap\, offers development training\, a cash budget\, and one year of international festival distribution to emerging filmmakers based in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Jo Reid): Made as part of the BBC100 Make Film History project\, Digital Natives is a personal exploration of a childhood on the internet. Using the computer desktop like a diary\, Digital Natives reflects on posting as performance. \nI Am a Cyborg: Conversations About Queerness and Anime (2023\, Dir. River Seager): Composed of interviews with LGBT+ individuals\, this is a documentary that discusses the popularity of anime in Queer communities. The visual style is heavily influenced by mid-2000s fandom aesthetics\, and the discussions rotate around androgyny in anime\, television censorship\, identity formation\, and fandom as a site of expression. \nStill We Thrive (2022\, Dir. Campbell X): Archive footage of Black history from the Caribbean\, United Kingdom\, United States and the African continent is interwoven with Black actors speaking direct to camera. Performers are Black – trans / non-binary\, and cis including Martina Laird\, Michelle Tiwo\, Kim Tatum and Don Warrington. Included are poems A Negro Dreams of Rivers by Langston Hughes and Yemoja by Olive Senior. Still We Thrive is a balm to Black people’s mental health now being assailed by images of violence and trauma. \nAangan ‘a blooming space’ (2023\, Dir. DESCRIPTION:As the Ranas – a happily patriarchal joint family – yearn for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line\, their youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious trans starlet. \nTheir impossible love story slowly illuminates the entire Rana family’s desire for a sexual rebellion. \n\n\nDiscussion Group \nAfter the screening\, there will be a discussion group facilitated by Nat Raha to decompress together and unpack the themes and topics explored in the film. \nPlease note that the discussion group is exclusively for anyone who is a person of colour (POC) or identifies as LGBTQ+. \nAbout Nat Raha \nDr Nat Raha is a poet and activist-scholar\, a South Asian British trans queer femme\, and a Lecturer in Fine Art Critical Studies at the Glasgow School of Art. Her books of poetry include Of sirens\, Body & Faultlines (Boiler House Press\, 2018) and Apparitions (nines) (Winner of the Nightboat Poetry Prize\, forthcoming 2024). Recent critical and creative writing appears in Queer Print in Europe\, 100 Queer Poems\, Transgender Marxism\, We Want It All: An Anthology of Radical Trans Poetics\, and Third Text (‘Imagining Queer Europe then and now’\, 2021). In TRANSFINITE\, the protagonists\, like smooth warriors\, choose to find that inner power and use it to transform undesirable situations into desirable ones in a snap. \nScreening with shorts FETISH and Something In The Closet. In Topher Campbell’s FETISH a multi-dimensional being bestrides the streets of New York in defiance and celebration as he embodies the past\, present and future of Blackness. Featuring a mesmerising original score by Mercury Prize Award Winner’s Young fathers. SUMMARY:Black History Month: Portrait of Jason
DESCRIPTION:Portrait of Jason shows sex worker and entertainer\, Jason Holliday\, recounting his life story for filmmaker Shirley Clarke. \nJason is the sole on-screen presence in the film. He narrates his life story to the camera\, behind which Clarke and her partner at the time\, actor Carl Lee\, provoke and berate Jason with increasing hostility as the film progresses. The film alleges to employ avant-garde and cinéma vérité techniques to reach the tragedy underlying Jason’s performative persona. However\, Portrait of Jason is one of if not the first documentation of black queer experiences and trauma exploited by white ‘gatekeepers’ for the sake of the artist’s cultural and financial capital gains. \nAlthough Portrait of Jason is a landmark film\, there is a need here to discuss the fuzzy problem of ‘visibility’ within the white/capitalist domination of visual culture. SUMMARY:LGBT Health & Wellbeing Community Filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:LGBT Health & Wellbeing is a charity promoting the health\, wellbeing\, and equality of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, and transgender people in Scotland and providing support\, services\, and information. Two of the organisation’s groups have recently created collectively-made short films\, which we will showcase at this event. Return to the Closet? was created as part of a collaboration between Luminate\, LGBT Health and Wellbeing\, artist Glenda Rome\, and participating community filmmakers. Luminate commissioned the film with support from LGBT Health and Wellbeing. This is a documentary exploring issues around care for older LGBT people. Everything Just Collapsed is an experimental short reflecting on stigma and survival by Tim Knights in collaboration with participants of The LGBT Mental Wellbeing Collective. SUMMARY:QWPS presents: We Were Always Crazy\, Freely Singing Queers
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 30th anniversary of the first collection of Scottish lesbian and gay literature\, And Thus Will I Freely Sing\, we are bringing together queer writers from the original collection and across later generations for readings and chat. Featuring contributors to And Thus and its 1992 follow-up\, The Crazy Jig\, as well as recently published queer anthology\, We Were Always Here. We will be joined by author\, activist\, and co-founder of Scotland’s original LGBT bookshop\, Lavender Menace\, Sigrid Nielsen\, writer and activist\, Jane Carnall\, and writer and poet\, April Hill. Gopal Shivakoti\, Country: Nepal\, Year: 2019\, Language/s: Nepali\nTraditionally\, Gai Jatra is literally translated as procession of cows and is an age-old festival commemorating the death of loved ones.
