This award-winning doc explores the world of intersex people – those born with any one of a large number of variations that make their gender ambiguous according to traditional binary ideals. Presenter Mani Bruce Mitchell\, one of New Zealand’s first out intersex people\, and director Grant Lahood locate interviewees willing to share their experiences. DESCRIPTION:Summer\, 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. In London\, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support but the activists are not deterred and set off in a minibus to a mining village in Wales to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. \nRobert Kincaid\, a member of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners who was present at events in 1984\, will join us for a Q&A after the film. \nPresented in association with LGBT Youth Scotland. \nThe event is suitable for Secondary 4-6. The film contains some strong language and sexual references. We are screening the film with English subtitles for accessibility. SUMMARY:Queers at the Movies: the State of Queer Film Exhibition in Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF) hosts a fun and informal evening of open conversation around queer film; what it is\, what it isn’t\, what we’d like it to be and where the mainstream film industry is getting it all kinds of wrong… We want to know what the successes and failings of queer film events in Scotland are and how we can communicate with straight\, cisgender film exhibitors and audiences. \nWe invite filmmakers and film lovers to submit their own short films or clips (max 10 minutes total) to be screened alongside the discussion in advance of the screening. Please send these to alice@sqiff.org. For accessibility reasons we will require all clips be subtitled or captioned. If you require advice on how to caption your film\, please contact marcdavid@sqiff.org. \nACCESSIBILITY: The CCA is accessible for wheelchairs.
