DESCRIPTION:Our 2018 Scottish shorts programme contains another exciting range of work by and about LGBTQ+ people and communities within our (un)fair land. Evi Tsiligaridou\, Year: 2018\nThese Are My Hands is a short documentary film-poem written and performed by radical British playwright\, Jo Clifford. It is a deeply moving\, personal account of transgender embodiment in a lifetime\, speaking of wounds\, challenges\, victories\, and the journey towards self-empowerment. The poet’s voice is embraced by a lyrical\, mesmerising soundtrack and together with the graceful and intimate visuals composes a profoundly tender piece. \nEnid & Valerie (2m)\nDir. Matthew Kennedy\, Year: 2018\nEnid & Valerie is a short film about a lone spinster named Valerie. Here we venture in to her dreams\, where she meets Enid (a witch). Could this be the start of an unlikely friendship? \nLong Lost Lover (5m)\nDir. Sandra Alland & Ania Urbanowska\, Year: 2017\nBisexual deaf poet\, Bea Webster\, performs a poem in British Sign Language about her return to Thailand. Poem in English and BSL by Bea Webster; reading of poem by K. Yvonne Strain. Part of Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back (Nine Arches Press\, 2017)\, edited by Sandra Alland\, Khairani Barokka and Daniel Sluman. \nHEARTS (8m)\nDir. Nas Saraei\, Year: 2018\nSarah\, a lost and stuck in a rut 20-something\, ponders and reflects on love in Edinburgh\, after losing the ‘one’ she thought was the ‘one’. \nPouring On House (10m)\nDir. Conor Baird\, Year: 2018\nPouring On House engages with the gradual event of leaving a longtime family home. This strange grief is caught between the familiarity and fascination of interiors and the surrounding suburban sites. Throughout\, a body surveys potential presences of contamination whilst coming to realise a disorientating hopelessness felt from ongoing anti-queer conditioning. \nSubmerged Village (21m)\nDir. Andrew Black\, Year: 2017\nExpanding on elements of Pamela Colman Smith’s drawing for The Moon tarot card – two dogs\, a freshwater crayfish\, a pool of water\, a mountainous landscape – Submerged Village takes discrete moments at rural locations in Yorkshire and the West coast of Scotland and claims them as queer experiences.

SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz (an asexual reading)
DESCRIPTION:1939 Hollywood fantasy movie\, The Wizard of Oz\, is known for its strong association with gay male culture\, thought to be the origin for homosexual men using the code ‘Friend of Dorothy’ to identify themselves to each other from the 1950s onwards. However\, other readings are possible. Academic writer Alexander Doty saw Dorothy as a lesbian\, torn between her attraction to the femme Glinda and butch Wicked Witch of the West. Meanwhile\, internet user ‘Spoofmaster’ posted a reading of the film online which regards Dorothy as asexual because she chooses gay non-human companions – that’s the Scarecrow\, Tinman\, and Cowardly Lion – whilst in Oz. An international campaign to free CeCe garnered significant support from media and activists\, including actress Laverne Cox. Cox signed on as executive producer of FREE CeCe!\, committed to exploring the role race\, class\, and gender played in the case. DESCRIPTION:A focus on the work of two British-South Asian queer women filmmakers across different generations. Activist and director Pratibha Parmar’s work centres on gender\, race\, and LGBT issues. Her groundbreaking Khush (1991)\, for instance\, portrays lesbian women and gay men in India and the Indian diaspora discussing acceptance and embracing of their sexuality. DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, local authorities in Scotland have increased care charging\, obliging people with disabilities to pay more than others to achieve the same basic human rights. Tax on Me is a hip-hop music video by filmmaker Kiana Kalantar-Hormozi and media coop responding to the Care Tax and the effect it has on people who need support. \nSophie Sexon\, performance artist and researcher based in Glasgow\, and Theresa Heath\, researcher and founder of Wotever DIY Film Festival based in London\, will join Kiana for the Tax On Me panel. Director and star Uisenma Borchu crafts an enigmatic tale about the pitfalls of monogamous expectations\, breaking free of taboos\, and existing as a bisexual woman of colour in a straight\, white society. \nScreening with short film Self and Others (6 mins)\, a study of the visual language of sexual fluidity as captured through the lens of film history. SUMMARY:Workshop: Working Class LGBTQ People in Film and TV
DESCRIPTION:Beginning with clips from TV and film\, we examine how LGBTQ working-class identities have been demonised\, patronised\, and romanticised onscreen\, before considering representation we would like to see in future. We will also think about how cultural venues can be made more welcoming to working-class people. \nThis workshop is for working-class people (background and/or current situation) and allies. Although interactive\, there is no pressure to actively participate in discussion. It is run by two working-class femme lesbians who navigate middle-classness via their work. SQIFF presents a collection of short films with authentic perspectives on the subject\, covering a range of topics and providing insights from a variety of individuals who have had personal encounters with mental health problems.
