DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nWhat does it mean to move through a world that was not built with you in mind? \nFrom Lagos roads and Cape Town Ubers to fairytale worlds and films that refuse to stay cancelled\, these works find different ways through structures of isolation\, exploitation and erasure. Sometimes movement offers escape; elsewhere it becomes survival\, imagination\, or simply the possibility of speaking on your own terms. \nThis programme is presented in collaboration with Jali Collective\, a grassroots collective based in Edinburgh dedicated to widening access to African cinema and celebrating and elevating Black\, African and diaspora stories through film and culture. DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nLok\, a 34-year-old filmmaker from Macau\, has been drifting through Hong Kong’s film industry. Although she has already directed a feature film\, her life remains unstable\, her next project has stalled\, and her girlfriend Bei Bei is pushing for them to get married\, buy a house\, and settle down. Facing multiple pressures\, Lok revisits different moments in her past: when she was studying in Taiwan aged 22\, and when she was growing up in Macau aged 17. In this female-centred coming-of-age drama\, director Tracy Choi asks what it means to be true to oneself\, exploring the ways in which past experiences shape the present. SUMMARY:A Frown Gone Mad
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nBotox\, Revolax\, Sculptra\, Hyaron and Juvederm: all sorts of products\, perhaps not all entirely legal\, sell like hot cakes in Bouba’s Lebanese beauty salon. Skilfully\, though not always gently\, she jabs a constant stream of clients with all kinds of injectables to temporarily reduce their facial wrinkles and frown lines.  \nDirector Omar Mismar films the patients from a fixed position as they recline on the white plastic-wrapped treatment table. Young and old\, women and men\, from housewives to hip influencers\, it seems like the whole country is voluntarily undergoing these painful and gory treatments\, all of which are shown in closeup.  \nDuring the treatment\, the threat of war is a regular topic. Will war break out? Will you go and fight? Mixedup memories of wars and explosions reveal how violence has been an almost constant presence in the lives of Beirut’s inhabitants for decades.  \nBouba’s medicine is rough humour and a magic injection. As one customer aptly puts it: “Most people in line here are tired and unhappy. SUMMARY:Enchanted Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:Listen to this Event Page\n  \nEnchanted ecologies include performance-based and experimental moving image works by queer and trans visual artists from the Brazilian Amazon. Together\, these films approach nature as a living being and highlight the role of cities in ecological conversations. They engage local non-human and spiritual beings through queer and trans perspectives that discuss environmental degradation\, colonial history\, community building\, and gender-based violence. In this collection\, we see the pervasiveness of non-human-oriented\, but humanly responsible\, practices in the collective imaginary of the Brazilian Amazon. \nThe programme invites us to reconsider what it means to relate to our local and global environments as a tactic to tackle environmental challenges and resist contemporary conservative and colonial forces. The screening includes a short introduction by the curators Danilo Baraúna and Xuanlin Tham\, and will be followed by a conversation with Fi Halliday\, a community gardener from the Govanhill LGBTQIA+ Gardening Group. \nCurated by Danilo Baraúna and Xuanlin Tham. Allyster Fagundes\, 2020\, Brazil\, 3 min.  \nAn autobiographical film exploring the mermaid myth as a metaphor to express psychological characteristics of the author/performer. Keila-Sankofa\, Music Rafa Militão\, 2025\, Brazil\, 6 min. \n‘Herança’ is a project born between dark waters and enchantments. A musical short film that weaves together cinema\, sound and ancestry\, guiding the narrative whilst keeping a watchful eye on the secrets of the gourd and the enchantments rooted in the Amazon. \n  \n(In)finite body?\, Dir. Ramon Reis\, 2023\, Brazil\, 7 min. \nAn aesthetic and political manifesto that mobilises symbolic struggles to approach ancestry and spatiality. A film about life and death in relation to the urban Amazon and filmed in Belém on the Day of the Dead. \nAccess notes: Disorientating Images\, Flashing Imagery. \nContent notes: Discussion of death. \n  \nI am a crab\, Dir. Nay Jinknss\, 2023\, Brazil\, 2 min. \nThis film portrays a traditional and ecological carnival parade created in 1989 in Curuçá (Brazilian Amazon). During the parade\, people use the mud (tijuco) from local mangroves as costumes\, covering their full bodies before they walk in the streets. On this day\, everyone is a crab\, and Matinta Perêra is around the city. \nAccess notes: Fast camera movement. \n  \nOur Steps Overflow with Thirst\, Dir. Danielle Fonseca\, 2009\, Brazil\, 3 min. \nA performance in which the artist offers her words to the river as a living being.
