There are also still tickets left for our screening of Catherine’s new film\, Chavela. \nFounder and Director of Aubin Pictures\, Catherine Gund is an Emmy-nominated producer\, director\, writer\, and activist. Her work focuses on sustainable social transformation\, sexuality and gender\, HIV/AIDS\, reproductive health\, and other social justice issues. She works actively with numerous organisations to this end and co-founded Third Wave Foundation\, which supports young women and transgender youth\, and DIVA TV\, an affinity group of ACT UP/NY. She was founding director of BENT TV\, a video workshop for LGBT youth. Her most recent films include Chavela (2017)\, Dispatches from Cleveland (2017)\, and Born to Fly (2014). \nIn this unique day-long workshop\, Catherine will explore her approach to making powerful\, character-centred films\, from shorts to features\, and her commitment to stories about LGBTQI communities. SUMMARY:Collect:if Presents: Gaysian Superheroes
DESCRIPTION:A focus on the work of two British-South Asian queer women filmmakers across different generations. Activist and director Pratibha Parmar’s work centres on gender\, race\, and LGBT issues. Her groundbreaking Khush (1991)\, for instance\, portrays lesbian women and gay men in India and the Indian diaspora discussing acceptance and embracing of their sexuality. We explore Pratibha’s prolific output alongside that of emerging London-based artist Seema Mattu\, who uses digital media to present an awareness of the overlooked ethnic self in regards to various degrees of minoritisation. \nWe are delighted Seema will join us to discuss her work. DESCRIPTION:Fred Barney Taylor’s documentary offers a portrait of Samuel R. Delany\, black gay man\, radical\, and revered author of science fiction novels. Delany is also a well-regarded literary critic and academic with a candid and iconoclastic approach. He recounts his Harlem childhood\, experiences with psychotherapy\, and promiscuous adventures in the infamous Everard Baths and other public-sex venues. Interviews are juxtaposed with grainy home movies of Delany’s family and absorbing footage of the bridges\, streets\, trains\, and skyscrapers of the writer’s native New York. \nSamuel R. DESCRIPTION:Described by director Gregg Araki as “A Beverly Hills 90210 episode on acid\,” Nowhere follows 18-year-old Dark Smith through a day in the teenager’s life in LA. Dark fails to get the emotional support he craves from girlfriend Mel\, who is also involved with a girl named Lucifer\, while Dark moons over hunky Montgomery. A spree of kinky sex\, hallucinogenic drugs\, random violence\, romantic misunderstandings\, and alien abduction ensues. Part of Araki’s notorious Teen Apocalypse Trilogy exploring alienation\, fluid sexuality\, and Armageddon. \nScreening with short Self and Others (6 mins)\, a study of the visual language of sexual fluidity as captured through the lens of film history.
