SQIFF Shorts: Specimen

Contemporary shorts to accompany the horror classics in our programme utilising gruesome imagery and horror movie tropes to explore LGBTQ+ issues. A terrified man deals with a dead body (that of his erstwhile lover) in his flat, blood oozes and old Taiwanese film clips flicker in surreal cinematic experiments, trippy drug-induced hallucinations lead a gay guy to imagine he is a sexual specimen in a world of foliage come alive, a friendly local on a London council estate is hiding a dark secret, and homophobic thugs in Russia get a surprise when they pick on the wrong queer.

Content note: disturbing scenes of violence.

ACCESS: Level access with Cinema plus accessible toilets all on ground floor (CCA). Films screening with subtitles for D/deaf and hard of hearing access. Hearing loop available. Films in a variety of languages.

Fu Guo (Floating Melon) (19m)

Xiao has spent the afternoon in bed with a guy who is now lying dead in his apartment from a drugs overdose. Terrified of the authorities finding out, he asks his friends to help clean up the mess.

A mother kills her own son for being gay. Flashbacks see him at university, in a cafeteria, and making love in a carwash whilst the wound from his murder is constantly visible.

A love letter in collage style, consisting of found footage and a queer reading of the work of Kang-Chien Chui, screenwriter of classic East Asian movies such as The Bells of Death and Twin Blades of Doom.

Set in present-day Moscow, 16-year-old Pyotr is baited by an ultranationalist group known for their violent abductions and attacks bolstered by Russia’s LGBT propaganda law, but Pyotr has a dangerous secret his attackers haven’t accounted for.
